Mujingfang Taiwanese Style Flat Profile Ebony Plane with HSS blade 180mm Reviews

Taiwanese style planes have a simple iron secured with a metal wedge very similar to a Japanese chipbreaker, the difference is that on a Japanese plane the iron is held independently and the chipbreaker can be removed or added at will, on a Taiwanese plane it is just there to hold the iron in place. If you are just getting started with oriental planes, these are a great place to begin. The HSS iron is hardened to RC63-64, well within the RC70 that the steel is potentially capable of but still harder than most tool steels. With this heat treatment the HSS delivers a very pleasant balance of edge retention, sharpenability and toughness.

It was well packed and neatly boxed. The wooden body is most attractive and very well finished. However the sole needed flattening with sand paper. The blade is thick enough but not as thick as a typical Japanese plane blade and is not hollowed or of layered steels. The blade inset is very well finished and accurate, as is the steel blade wedge. Out of the box it needed quite a lot of work to flatten the back and hone a sharp microbevel. Once these adjustments had been made it worked as well as any Japanese or Western style plane that I have. Gossamer shavings and a very smooth silky finish, pushed or pulled, with good edge retention. Setting the cutting depth is easy but can be achieved with patience and practice. Surprisingly to me the flat profile body was more comfortable to use than the curved body, which I got at th same time. Scores 3/5 out of the box and 5/5 when fettled. The above review applies to the curved body plane as well
