Mujingfang Bevel Up Smoothing Plane 180mm Reviews

5 Rating 3 Reviews
Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

Made from a limited stock of gorgeous 16 year loft matured rosewood and designed to take very light finishing cuts, the Mujingfang bevel up smoother is a fusion of Taiwanese planemaking methods with English mitre plane geometry. The low bedding angle of the blade makes it very easy to adjust accurately - ideal for beginners learning to set a plane by the 'tap and try' method for the first time. It also places the mouth further forward, more like a western plane than an oriental one.The tungsten HSS blade is bedded at 25 degrees with a 30 degree ground bevel, giving 55 degrees or middle pitch (one up from York). Adding a 5 degree secondary bevel will give cabinet pitch, 60 degrees, which combined with a very light cut reduces the risk of tearout to near zero.
Blade: W/Mo High Speed Steel RC64 Overall length: 180mm Body width: 60mm Blade width: 44mm

This is my first pull stule plane so I wanted to have a play with a budget one first. Needed about half an hour on 150, 400 and 1000 diamond plates to true the bevel, back of the iron was pretty much flat but did the "ruler trick" as I'm impatient. The cap iron is twisted in that it engages at the top with two bends which at the moment are uneven. Even so, flattened the edge and had a play. Sole of the plane is nice and flat and the first shavings were nice and smooth, left a glassy surface on some gash pine. For the price this is night and day better than any western style plane anywhere near the price. Not happy as I now want to buy loads more!

I’ve a selection of Mujinfang planes and have been satisfied with all of them. The latest bevel up 180mm has yet to be used in anger but if it performs as the others I’ll be happy.
