3M™ Aluminium Oxide Micro Finishing Film Reviews

5 Rating 5 Reviews
Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

3M™ PSA adhesive backed Microfinishing Film is essentially a heavier duty version of imperial lapping film with a slightly thicker film backing and a harder compound of bonding resin.
Aluminium oxide particles are more pebble-like than silicon carbide particles so they don't fracture as easily and last longer.
A high-strength polyester film backing is coated with premium, micron-graded mineral particles that are electrostatically oriented for greater cutting efficiency. The particles are bonded into a layer of resin that wears away slowly for increased durability.
PSA is the acronym for Pressure Sensitive Adhesive and is a heavy duty version of the adhesive on the back of a Post-It note.
To use, cut each sheet into the desired width, peel the backing and fix a strip of each grade next to each other on a piece of float glass or other perfectly flat substrate applying firm pressure for an even secure bond.
Sheet size: 8½" x 11" (216mm x 279mm)
Mineral: Aluminium Oxide

I now use this system on my courses. It's cheaper than water stones and stays flat.

I have always used water stones for sharpening because they cut so well. I tried scary sharp when the original lapping film came out and was not impressed it was to delicate and tore easily. This micro finishing film is a different story.I start with 40 micron down to 9 finishing on 3 lapping sheet.

An integral part of the way we teach tool preparation and sharpening here at Waters and Acland furniture School. The scary sharp system stays flat. This abrasive is of the finest quality. It all works as it is supposed too. We flatten the backs of all plane blades and chisels with this system.
