The Fugaku range of folding Japanese saws from Gyokucho offer an interesting alternative for woodworkers looking for the efficiency and accuracy of Japanese saws with the sturdy feel and presence of a western backsaw.
The Kataba is a backless saw with a stiffer blade, more aggressive teeth and a short reinforced metal spine that lets you make deep straight cuts into composites, hardwoods, sheet materials and thicker timber.
The saw has a satin lacquered beech handle that sits nicely in the hand, the folding mechanism and a short but heavy spine preserve the balance of the saw. The blade locks into the extended position with a sprung lever, much like a lock knife, so there is no risk of the saw folding up in use.
When the time eventually comes to change the blade, the crosshead screws are Japanese industrial standard (JIS), although they look like a PH No.2 you will actually get better engagement with a PH No.1.

The construction, handling and mechanism is first class. It''s that fine it would not look out place place in a kitchen tool drawer. When you feel and use it you can see where the money went. this is quitea fast cross-cutting saw with a stiffish blade and leaves virtually no break-out, as is typical of a Gyokucho saw. Perfect.
