Richard Kell No.2 Honing Guide with Large Rollers Reviews

4.7 Rating 9 Reviews
Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

For standard length chisels and western plane irons the Richard Kell No.2 LGE is an oustandingly well designed and made tool. If you use Japanese planes and chisels or short bladed chopping chisels, the small roller version may be preferred.Designed using geometric principles that date back to ancient Greece and with each component carefully made in a toolroom environment each Kell tool is a work of artistry. A pair of polycarbonate washers grip the blade from the sides whilst the back of the blade registers against a pair of stainless steel rods. This unique arrangement uses the correct face of the tool as the datum for establishing the bevel angle and allows tapered or handcrafted blades to be honed accurately.
The UHMWPE rollers and solid brass bobbins are individually machined from solid and selectively paired for annular thickness to better than half a thou.
All of Richard Kell's honing guides come with a copy of his wonderfully clear set of handwritten instructions, complete with neatly drawn diagrams, that leave you in no doubt that your honing guide was made by a man for whom precision is as essential as breathing.
Capacity: 0 to 2⅝" width (66.67mm)

Lusted after one of these for quite some time. After finally committing, have to say am a little disappointed. It seems I'm the odd one out because I see nothing but praise for it everywhere. Beautifully made with nice materials, but in the hand ( and I do have big hands) I found it fiddly and uncomfortable. The balance is awkward especially with longer chisels where you have a short blade projection and long overhang on the handle. On a standard width stone it's difficult to keep the rollers from falling off the edge; yes you can build a stage around it but it's just an extra faff. I've spent quite a bit of time with it but still come to the same conclusion......... small, uncomfortable to hold and hard to balance. Sorry.... it might be just me )

Been desiring one of these for quite a while. Finally bit the bullet and purchased one but have to say am a little disappointed. Maybe it's my large hands but I find it very difficult to hold, especially with a long tool that has a short projection from rollers to stone. The balance is awful. Also the rollers skate off the edge of the stone with a wide blade. Yes you can make a support platform but this is just an extra faff. I've had several attempts to get along with this jig but just cant get a comfortable grip on such a small thing. It's lovely well made tool but am looking to replace it with the Veritas one.

I debated buying this for quite a while. I don't really do much if any sharpening so this seemed an expensive luxury item. I considered spending my money on other things. How wrong I would have been. The quality of this item is exceptional. In fact it screams precision quality. The ease of use for a total novice is difficult to overstate. A truly remarkable item worth every penny and more. If you are debating buying this... don't. Just buy it. You will not regret it and will look for excuses to use it. A true joy to own.

I must say, as a beginner, it surprised me how easy and accurate it is, I tested it with a chisel that I previously botched/ruined while trying to hand sharpen it (I thought I was Paul Sellers) and it helped me restore it to its former glory with ease! The cost is worth it considering the fact that this is a one man shop/operation and the quality and low tolerances of the build. Overall, highly recommended.
