Made by Ray Iles from EN9 spring steel, the premium froe is the same size as the large froe, but the canals are rounded, making it more efficient at moving through the wood and easier to use. Comes complete with 14 inch beech handle.

Handle Length: 385mm (15⅛")
Handle Diameter, Tapers: 30 - 34mm (1⅛" - 1⅜")
Blade thickness, tapers: top, from 12mm - 2mm, (0.47 - 0.07")

“This froe is, as with so many of Ray Iles tools, well-designed and well-made. It's sturdy and likely to last for decades, as another of his froes I have has done. The blade shape is a bit more refined than my older froe. It does seem to split slightly difficult stuff more readily and also "starts" easier, with less inclination to just bounce off the tougher stuff, at the first knocker-blow, that one is attempting to rive. It came ready to use although I did give it a little bit of sharp, as I generally do to a froe, to enable that initial first bite into the end grain. A froe doesn't need to be razor sharp, though, as it's splitting not cutting.”

“I did not know such a tool existed, and had been using a hand axe to produce kindling, with limited success. Having seen a video of how to use a froe, it has made production of kindling easier, quicker and safer. The service was excellent, the froe is sharp and well finished. An excellent acquisition.”

“Gives neater splits than the wedges I have been using. That's not so important for firewood but I'm planning on doing some green wood turning later this year so this will be a very useful tool.”
