I bought this plane iron for an old record no. 4 plane and it's too thick by about a 1mm, I've tried nearly everything and I don't want to widen the mouth so I think I have some rubbing on an oil stone for many many hours to do ... Nice iron though flatten the back quickly

I fitted this into a Record No4 as a replacement for the existing Spear and Jackson iron. During fitting I also improved the stability of the frog (it had previously had a slight wobble when not tightened and burrs on the upper face). I also removed minor burrs from the mouth of the plane and fitted and polished the chip breaker, these improvements doubtless aided the overall result which was an utter transformation from an indifferent plane that had always been troublesome to a suberb plane giving outstanding results. This plane iron only required a very quick hone on a leather strop (mainly to remove residue from the protective sleeve) after which it immediately produced superfine shavings leaving a perfect finish. I bought this to assess whether a replacement iron would give a level of improvement that justifies the cost , I am convinced that the cost is entirely justified and I will definitely be buying more!

I had one of these for a few years. I sharpens easily and very sharp, adds a bit of heft and never chatters.
