2in (50mm) Quangsheng Cap Iron (chipbreaker) to fit No.4 and No.5 bench planes. Supplied complete with cap iron screw to accommodate blades up to 3mm thick. When trying to improve the performance of bench planes, the chipbreaker is usually the best place to start. This thick, low profile cap iron greatly improves stiffness and reduces vibration compared with the traditional pressed steel design. Please note that we are unable to ship Quangsheng products to North America due to retail exclusivity restrictions.

I bought it to replace an old cap iron on my father-in-law's very old non-brand plane and it has transformed the plane. The old plane is probably better than my Stanley plane.

The cap iron is a rely good replacement for the beat up old Stanley one I used prior. The fit-up to the blade was ok, but needed a little refining on a diamond plate to make perfect. In combo with a new Ray Iles blade its performing fantastically. The cap iron did arrive with some postage damage to the front edge, however customer services sorted it out in decent time over the Christmas break/around postal strikes, so overall happy all around.

Ordered this with a thicker iron for a Stanley No5. Didn't arrive with the other part of the order! However, when i was able to eventually get through to Work Shop Heaven they sent it straight out. Straight out of the packaging I put the Ray Isle blade together with this cap iron. No fettling or sharpening and already seeing an unbelievable difference. The plane feels stiffer and yet more responsive. Will be upgrading all my planes as money allows. Truly amazed at the difference. My No5 is about WW2 era and required no mouth alteration.

I was a bit surprised as to how soft the metal is after a little flattening it was hard to get rid of the burr even with 6000 , anyway it mated well with the Iron in the end , worth the money a good investment . Admin: Cap irons need to be soft so that they absorb vibration, a polishing mop is the easiest way to remove the flap at the edge.

Replaced the cap iron on an old Stanley No. 4 I'm fixing up and I'm really happy with how solid the plane feels now, when taking a shaving. Tempted to buy the thicker blade as well but so far it's doing a lovely job with the standard iron. Very happy with the price and how it's improved the plane.

I have bought several of these cap irons to help improve the quality of shavings on my Stanley planes. They are by no means perfect, they will need some fettling to ensure they mate properly with the iron, although this is easily done on a diamond plate. That said, it does improve performance.
