Quangsheng No. 101 Small Block Plane Reviews

The baby of the block plane world, the 101 is just plain adorable! The original Stanley 101 was intended for children, but the tiny plane proved so popular with modelmakers, patternmakers, musical instrument makers and other serious craftsmen that Stanley had to make some quick changes to their advertising. The Quangsheng 101 is much better made tool with some important differences: cast in bronze, so it can't rust, with a full cap and a lower bedding angle than the original for improved comfort and versatility. The QS also has a straightforward adjuster, absent on the original. An ideal tool for modelmakers, luthiers, and anyone else who produces small scale fine tolerance work.

Before choosing to buy this plane I had also shortlisted the Veritas version, and although I preferred the weight of the Veritas cast iron body the screw holding the cap iron seemed quite small and the locating slot looked a little flimsy. I may be wrong but the bar on the Quangsheng looked to be a more robust solution. The iron needed some work to flatten the back but it didn't take too long and is a one-off job anyway. The body is accurately machined and the sole is perfectly flat. It's straight-forward to set up and is lovely to use. Overall very pleased!

Bought as a present for my husband. he has only given it a quick test but says it is brilliant. Very useful for smaller projects.

Very handy little plane. I make instruments, mainly guitars, and have wanted to try ne for a while. I already use a Lie-Nielsen No. 60 1/2 Low Angle Block Plane and a LN 102, - this feels a similar quality in the hand and costs almost half the price. And I know the T10 blades are excellent, and take a very keen edge, I use them as upgrades for my older Stanleys and Records.

Although small this plane gets a lot of use in my workshop. Cleaning up, shaping, fairing. My favourite plane!!
