Quangsheng No. 5 Bedrock Pattern Jack Plane Reviews

4.8 Rating 13 Reviews
Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

The Quangsheng No.5 jack plane is designed to be used across the grain, its weakest direction, to correct twists, cupping and bowing and bring the board close to the finished dimension. The blade should be honed with a camber to leave a scalloped surface, this minimises the amount of material you need to remove with the longer No.6 or No.7 planes to bring the board to size.
The narrow 2" blade of the No.5 makes it easier to push so you can take a fairly deep bite with each pass. For true jack planing work it is the more sensible choice.
Quangsheng bedrock pattern handplanes, unlike the more common Bailey pattern, have a full contact area between the body and the frog, hence the name 'bedrock'. The frog can also be adjusted to widen or narrow the mouth of the plane without the need to remove the irons. Simply loosen the two locking screws on either side at the back of the frog, adjust the central screw to set your desired mouth opening and then nip up the side screws again. This system is easier, faster, much more accurate, and less likely to damage the cutting edge.

Nicely put together plane, I have traditionally used older Stanley planes and this is my first bench plane from a contemporary manufacturer. It’s nice and heavy and the blade seems to hold an edge well and sharpens easily enough by hand on diamond stones, so far it’s excelling as a shooting plane. Negatives - only one, the iron took a lot of flattening and it still has a small grinding mark along the side of the iron where it meets the leading edge that is so deep it won’t polish out with flattening, but I’ve tested it by smoothing some hardwood and there’s no track marks visible so I’m happy it will eventually disappear as the iron becomes shorter with successive sharpening.

Not really used yet, but an exceptionally well made plane, knocking spots off stanley and record, for build quality. Hopefully as good to use as it looks.

There's problems with setting up,the screw is not tightening properly but also without it adjusting properly I can't adjust the blade, and if I loosen the screw even then slightest bit it doesn't hold the frog, very annoying for the price

After initially feeling the plane iron wasn't holding its edge very well, I'm pleased to say that following a few sharpenings at the the 300/1000 grit diamond plate, the edge is now fine. I've been shooting end grain of oak & mahogany that's been in my Dad's workshop for at least 60 years (and it was reclaimed when he got it). The plane is performing really well.

These planes represent excellent value for money and in my view perform equally as well as the offerings from North America. My purchase was flat as a pancake with an iron which takes a really good long-lasting edge. The whole thing is a pleasure to use. The casting is a little gritty to start with but soon beds in.

When I unpacked this, I was disappointed to find a small nick out of the bevel. However, after putting a camber on the blade that vanished, along with the heavy grinding marks. The overall quality is amazing considering the price. I usually buy Lie Nielsen planes, and this is nearly up there at about £180 less! After a brief honING I could easily use it as a smoother, let alone a jack. There's plenty of weight so it glides through knots. My initial doubts about "cheap chinese knock offs" have been completely dispelled. I will be buying more of these wit no hesitation.
