Quangsheng No. 8 Bedrock Pattern Jointer Plane Reviews

4.3 Rating 3 Reviews
Read Workshop Heaven Reviews

The Quangsheng No.8 is a specialist tool for preparing long edges and large surfaces more accurately and in fewer strokes than any of the other metal bench planes. It is longer and heavier than planes used for day to day stock removal work, so like the smoother, it only comes out when needed, does its 'bang on straight in a few passes' thing, and gets put away again.
The surface needs to be reasonably close before you even think about taking a jointer to it, but with carefully machined or hand trued components you can achieve astonishing tolerances for flatness and straightness in a few passes.
Quangsheng bedrock pattern handplanes, unlike the more common Bailey pattern, have a full contact area between the body and the frog, hence the name 'bedrock'. The frog can also be adjusted to widen or narrow the mouth of the plane without the need to remove the irons. Simply loosen the two locking screws on either side at the back of the frog, adjust the central screw to set your desired mouth opening and then nip up the side screws again. This system is easier, faster, much more accurate, and less likely to damage the cutting edge.

Time this one had anther review. Arrived very well packed (bag, bubble wrap, box, popcorn, box), Casting finish and paint pretty much flawless, beautiful handles which fit the plane and my hand really well. and only 1/4 turn of backlash in the adjuster (slightly less than the ones on my 4 x L-N planes). Checked for flatness and squareness on an inspection grade granite block, - slightly better than to British Standard (+/-0.001" in my case vs 0.0015" standard) Refer to -https://smallworkshop.co.uk/2016/03/26/bench-planes-how-flat-does-the-sole-need-to-be/ Blade/cap iron - great, just need a little (normal) fettling, and honing. I'm a big fan of the T10 irons, take and hold an excellent edge, fitted them to several of my planes. Well pleased with my purchase.

Overall quality is really high - machine finish is completely acceptable, there's no need to flaten frog surfaces - iron moves freely, paint job and handles are nice. The only problem I have, is concave sole - I can put 0,35 mm feeler gauge on one, and 0,25 on the other side of the plane - right under the frog. Seems like the back of the plane is the problem - when I measure the sole without last 5 cm of the plane, 0,1 mm goes with slight resistance - it's more acceptable. I'm affraid it will take some time, to flatten it. Due to the fact, that there are no alternatives (LN is N/A for some time, others' quality is questionable) - I would totally buy it again. :)

This has a quality feel to it, only requiring the blade back to be flatted before use. I was surprised at flimsiness of the carton (not the postal packaging) and the way the blade was left exposed breaking through the thin cardboard box.
