The Quangsheng low angle jack is the Swiss army knife of hand planes, and an excellent choice for beginners looking for a straightforward, versatile, multi-function tool as their first premium bench plane.
Since the whole point of a bevel up plane is its versatility, the Quangsheng No 62 comes installed with the standard 25 degree iron so the low effective pitch makes it a superb choice for shooting endgrain and planing mild straight grained timber. Additional 38 and 50 degree blades are available as an optional extra, enabling it to be used as a York pitch or high angle panel plane for smoothing difficult timbers.
The low angle jack plane has an adjustable mouth that can be closed up for precision work or opened for heavier stock removal. The side wings provide ample stability for shooting without restricting access to the blade, lever cap and adjuster.

When fitted with the optional 38 degree blade installed it functions in much the same way as any other York pitch plane. Its reasonably long sole means that you can take component sized pieces from sawn to four squared with a sensible degree of accuracy.
With the 50 degree blade installed you are getting much closer to a scraping action; using slow strokes and a very fine set, highly figured timber, burrs and patches of reversing grain will all give up their hidden beauty without any nonsense.

“I already have a Quangsheng #4 and #6, with Matthews advice the #62 would be better value to me than a #5 jack plane because of its versatility being 'Swiss Army knife of a plane'. Indeed it is! Has good weight to it, smooth adjustments, irons that take a fine edge. I recommend any Quangsheng plane!”

“Having recently bought both the Quangsheng low angle block plane and low angle rebate block plane I was so blown away by the quality v excellent value that I was eager to try other planes from the Quangsheng range. Browsing on ebay the other day my eyes were drawn to an advert for a low angle jack plane complete with three additional blades.... The plane was advertised as pre-owned and was on a nine day auctio... hmmm not for me; I contacted the seller and agreed a buy now price; the deal was done and the plane duly arrived. Oh my god; it had never been used at all, none of the irons had been honed... amazing! And all for less than half the original price!!! Off to the shed, one minute to hone and apply a back bevel and wow! Possibly the best plane I have ever had the pleasure to use... absolutely effortless to use, beautifully weighted; fantastic! Unfortunatley the batteries in my Vernier gauge or flat but my god the shavings are ever ever so fine. Faults? Well, yes there are a few niggling things but nothing that can't be rectified. The boss on which the front knob and mouth adjuster are mounted was possibly the worst bit of machining I have ever witnessed and the adjustable mouth isn't parralel to the blade. Both of these issues are easily rectified with a file and wet and dry. The only other issue is that the Norris style adjuster provides virtually no adjustment... the blade is such a snug fit in the body that there is no room for movement. This of course means that accuracy in keeping the cutting edge square is going to be vitally important. Overall this plane, even at full price, is amazing value and a truly superb tool. I would honestly be very surprised if either a Veritas or Lie Nielsen tool could be any better other than in bling factor..., The 'establishment' suggest that a low angle jack plane is something you use very little...personally I doubt that this will be true so go on spoil yourself!”

“I had some really nasty Pine timber that I was going to throw away. But With the 25 degree blade set for a very fine shaving, and the mouth closed up, it came out like glass. I'm very Impressed with the all-round quality of this plane.”

“Very pleased with this plane. Just a tiny amount to take off the toe and heel to flatten the sole but otherwise very impressive build quality. I used a so-called heirloom plane on a cabinet-making course, this is a very close copy and in use I defy a "mortal" woodworker to feel any difference.”

“These Quangsheng planes from Workshop Heaven are excellent quality and great value for money. Buy them here as others claiming to be from the same factory just won't have the same quality control. We have a number of these planes both in our school and also in our fine furniture workshop.”

“After much research I went for this plane, even though I had a slight niggle that it was made in the far east. When it arrived I was blown away by the build quality. The chip breaker is well made as are the three irons supplied. A top notch well made plane at the most amazing price.”

“I can't justify to myself (or my dear wife) splashing out on Veritas or Lie-Nielsen. I tried a Stanley SW 62 low angle jack and had to send it back. I spent the refund - and a little more - on one of these and I am so pleased with it - an excellent tool, beautifully made.”
