Clifton No 410 Shoulder Plane Reviews

4.5 Rating 2 Reviews

Light, narrow and extremely accurate, the Clifton 410 is a perfectly proportioned shoulder plane for one handed use.At just ¹¹⁄₁₆" (18mm) wide, the 410 is perfect for cleaning up machined rebates and housing joints as well as trimming tenons. The cutting iron is considerably thicker than both the Preston original and the later Record versions. It sits on a beautifully machined 18.5 degree bed with the unbreakable malleable iron lever arm applying pressure directly behind the 25 degree bevel. The mouth is exquisitely fine, giving a very high standard of surface finish.

Having previously tried the QS Luban 92 (which I found a bit too large to handle but better finished, despite being half the price)I purchased this to cut/trim rebates and tenon shoulders. Works beautifully and comfortable to handle, though there are some sharpish machined edges on the sides.

As a joiner I made hundreds of tenons on machines, now retired and needing to lightly trim hand cut shoulders and cheeks by hand I bought this plane. It is accurately made, fits into my hand and helps me produce work that I am not ashamed to let my two sons who are joiners inspect.
