A proper birdcage awl with a long slender square point, nicely hardened with sharp edges to create small holes in wood and ream them to size. The birdcage awl gets its name from making the holes in the wooden frames of bird cages into which the cane, riven wood or metal bars were inserted. The reaming action is very gentle, so it can be used in relatively close proximity to an edge.
