“Let’s start with the obvious - Suunto’s pricing strategy is obviously to make buying this as close to a no brainer as possible. As a bundle with the Tank Pod, it’s a whole £900 cheaper than the Garmin equivalent. Very nearly half price. It’s cheaper than the Peregrine TX and Swift Transmitter with nearly the same diving functionality and acts a sports watch besides. Both cost comments based on July 2024 pricing.
As a dive watch, it is very good and my niggles are just niggles based on preference. The screen is as bright and clear as the best of them. It’s fully functional as a recreational computer. The underwater compass is coming in software release (although no timing on that).
Be clear that it’s a computer and sports watch. It’s not a smart watch like the Apple Watch Ultra. These are very different propositions. The AWU is considerably more capable but narrowly limited as a dive computer with the Oceanic app (which is very good). The Ocean is a good computer and sports tracker but otherwise pretty dumb (and notably less capable than the Garmin Descent).
If you want the watch format and to not spend a fortune, buy the Ocean.”
