“One is the S80 (bought in 2016) and the other one is unknown-but is a Bactrac, bought that one in 2021. Why do I get off the chart readings on both. One says 0.13 and the other says 0.45. It's crazy. I am going to buy a dif model”

“I have used this approx 50 times over a year, which has given me a great felt sense of how high my BAC is. My guess is usually within 0.01 of the reading. This is different from cheaper units, where I was more often surprised by the reading.
But after a year's use, it was starting to read 10-20% different from a new s80 I bought to compare. And sometimes it would give a reading several times the correct value. So clearly it is time for a calibration.
I learned some tricks: rinsing out the mouth with water will lower the reading by approx 20%. Hyperventilating or just taking deep breaths before use also lowers the reading by approx 20%.
The biggest surprise was how slowly BAC drops while sleeping; I guess the lower metabolism makes the elimination of the alcohol take longer. I sometimes would be able to get a BAC reading after a full night's sleep. Staying awake and walking drops the BAC much quicker.”

All my friends seem to find it quite amusing that I bought it. I'm like, well, the cost of finding out where you're at through normal channels isn't exactly a good course of action. “After earning a DWI, I bought one of Bactrack S80 to make sure it doesn't happen again. A couple of years ago, I sent it in for calibration, and during the time I didn't have it, I got my car stuck in a snowbank during a whiteout, and got my second DWI. The consequences for 2nd DWI in my state are fierce and the cost is high. Of course, the main issue is that I don't want to harm myself or others. I bought a second unit to make sure I'm never without a means to check my BAC before driving.
It doesn't take a high BAC to get in trouble on the road, even if something minor happens that requires police involvement. The nature of drinking is that it's very difficult to gauge your own level of intoxication, so be safe and get your own S80 Breathalyzer.”
