Portrait Painting with Jonathan Yeo Reviews

A really great wide-ranging course. Not so much a "how to" guide (which is almost impossible to produce with fine art painting) but a fascinating insight into Jonathan's influences, thought process and the decisions he makes when working. Well worth the investment. With any subject that takes years to master people often think they will receive a magic bullet from a course - especially where painting is concerned. As I paint and draw for a living I have been reminded that I need to explore more, take my time, observe more and be myself in my work - for that the class has been extremely worthwhile.

I greatly appreciate his openenss, vulnerability and willingness to discuss all aspects of his art. However, I was hoping he would show more techniques about his process. There was too much focus on him explaining (with the 3 camera setup) rather than doing. It was still a good learning experience and his work is stunning and inspirational

Very tedious and disappointing. He paints stunning portraits but he is no teacher. It’s more about him than about how to paint portraits.

Hi there, Thanks for your review. We value every BBC Maestro customer, and really value your feedback. All courses have detailed course notes to accompany them, which a lot of learners find really useful to get the most out of their course. There's also lots of great course exercises in there! I hope this helps, but feel free to contact our amazing customer service team at support@bbcmaestro.com if you would like more support! Best, Rebecca

It's always a risk to commit to a video when it's not clear what to expect. As an amateur I would have been expecting it to include techniques I would have been very disappointed. As it turned out I was happy with a narrative about the issues, dimensions and options which have made me think more deeply about the art of portraits. From which I learnt some lessons. Thank you.

I've already recommended BBC Maestro to friends and family, as a learning opportunity, but also the Jonathan Yeo videos have been a wonderful chance for me to see how artists work. I paint portraits in oils, a recent finalist in the SAA competition, and regularly follow Raw Umber Studios, drawing in pastel, charcoal, and want to expand my knowledge and maybe even sell some paintings in time. Jonathan is very interesting, as he hasn't been to art school, and neither have I. I wanted to know more, and I could watch it through several times. May even paint him from the videos.Thank you for the opportunity. A recent pastel drawing is added below ( not of me, by the way).
