“I want to start by saying, I don’t plan on writing for young adults. My genre of choice is Horror – Horror intended for an 18+ audience - and to be completely transparent, I purchased a BBC Maestro subscription because I was interested in some of the other writing courses (the thrillers and the chillers, the suspenseful and fantastic – all of which had been great!) However, after I exhausted the supply that tugged at my immediate interest (and since the format of these classes is quite addictive – great work, BBC Maestro!), I told myself, what the heck! I ought to expand my horizons; there’s so much more to learn on this site (and my subscription doesn’t expire for another 2 months, so there’s that). I browsed back, and I browsed forth, and that is how I stumbled upon Malorie Blackman’s course “Writing For Young Adults”.
I’m not one to use the word ‘love’ lightly, and, let me tell you, I LOVED this course. I drank it up. I had at least one “Aha!” moment per lesson. I learned so much, and Malorie’s enthusiasm and passion for the craft made the learning experience all the more enjoyable. Listening to her was an absolute treat! I took 8 pages worth of notes and I’ll make sure to apply the tips, tricks, and advice to my own writing from now on, even if I plan on targeting an audience older than her’s – and speaking of my writing, this is the main reason why I’m sharing this review:
In my opinion, the course name “Writing For Young Adults” (although accurate, since Malorie writes for young adults) is like calling gold “a metal”. If you’re a writer, but don’t plan on writing for ‘young’ adults, give this course a try anyway! It’s fantastic and Malorie’s advice is invaluable! And in case you don’t hear anything you haven’t before, you’ll find, at the very least, that her energy is contagious. You need some motivation to write? This is it!”
