“In my opinion, this projector is the total package for the every day blue collar home theater enthusiast. Let’s be honest, the majority of us don’t have the luxury of having a dedicated home theater room that is light controlled. My set up is for use as an every day projector for watching TV and nighttime movie watches in my main living room. Basically, I needed to find that projector that walks that fine line of having an acceptable daytime viewing with outside light coming into the living room, but also provide a solid accurate nighttime picture for nighttime movie watching. On top of all this, I was looking for something that had a reliable reputation and minimal bulb maintenance. I put a lot of hours on my projectors. For almost 10 years, I owned a BenQ W1000. What a phenomenal projector that was for me! For that 10 year period it served its purpose for that day and time with minimal hassles. When I made the jump to 4K projectors a few years ago I purchased an Optima UHD60. Honestly, what a big mistake that was. It was loud and it was fussy to set up in my living room. Even worse, it had reliability issues and eventually died on me. To make this long story short, after much research I ended up purchasing the BenQ TK860i. So let’s review!
First, the obvious. This thing is a light canon! The first thought that popped into my mind when I set it up in my living room was, “Wow, this thing is bright but what’s the catch here?” Before I could even align the picture with my screen, I was already noticing how amazing the picture looked during the daytime right out of the box. Even in the normal mode, the BenQ was almost whisper quiet compared to my Optima. Already a win there! Secondly, the physical set up was pretty easy to align. With a screen that measures almost 130 inches from about 14 feet away, I had no issues setting it up. Another win! Once I got to sitting down and really diving into the menu and setting up the picture, I encountered my first problem. But I would categorize it as a good problem to have. Even in a daytime environment, the picture was almost too bright! Hahaha! The beautiful thing is, the picture was bright without sacrificing accuracy. I found the adjustments in the settings menu to be pretty granular and adjusted the picture to my liking. Making it slightly less bright. Again, if you are dealing with a projector in a well lit environment, this was a good problem for me to have. So at this point, you may be wondering about the elephant in the room. “What about the black levels?” The thing you hear most frequently as a “con” in reviews of this projector. Well, let me tell you! It’s probably the thing that most surprised me about this purchase. After a few tweaks in the settings in my daytime viewing environment, I was pretty blown away by the black levels I was seeing. I was thinking to myself maybe I just had my expectations set really low based on the reviews? After playing with the projector for a couple hours I began to realize that in fact, it was the reviewers have it all wrong. In fact, I begin to realize that this projector is definitely the unicorn solution to people with setups like mine. During daytime viewing, I was honestly impressed with the contrast levels and black levels were saturated enough to where they didn’t seem washed out and grey. Needless to say, this was the best projection picture I had ever seen in my living room during the daytime, especially compared to the Optoma. Sorry fanboys!
But what about nighttime viewing? Again, the black levels impressed me because I was expecting them to look washed out compared to the rest of the picture. Nope! While not as good as a 5,000$+ dedicated home theater projector, this picture looked amazing at night. Truly! Colors popped without being overly saturated and the black levels exceeded my expectations by a wide margin. So yeah, needless to say I feel the reviewers got it wrong. I’m starting to believe a lot of these reviewers didn’t set up the projector properly in there every day viewing environment. Didn’t spend real time living with it. Anyways, enough about that. I was overly impressed by the picture top to bottom. I can tell you for $1300, It’s going to be hard for anyone to buy a projector as good as this one!
A couple other things. The projector was able to pick up the HDMI signal very quickly. I have a 75 foot long fiber optic HDMI cable and this is always a concern when you’re getting a new projector. No problems there. I’m not a big fan of all devices being smart these days. Probably the GenX in me. LOL. So although I did connect the BenQ/Android dongle, I’m just not gonna use it probably. Not a knock at all. I’m just happy using my AppleTV connected to my receiver. But it’s there if I ever need it I guess, and kudos to BenQ letting the consumers have a choice on whether to use it or not.
In the end, for people using their projector the way I have described, there is no better compromise. And the reality is with these kind of setups, there is no perfect solution. But let me tell you this. If you want to get close to perfection at 1300$, look no further than the TK860i. The Jack of all Trades, Swiss Army Knife, and unicorn of home theater projectors! Just buy one! You won’t be disappointed.”

“I did a lot of research for the projector I wanted for my home movie theater and purchased and returned a bunch of them until I found this one. It really lives up to my standards. Great picture quality. Awesome sound and lots of features. Will keep it and use it until the lamp dies, whenever that is. Definitely recommend it.”

“I like the projector, its picture and colors. Remote control is not very friendly or easy to use. Accessing and getting the enclosed android dongle did not work for me and I am using it with Amazon fire stick instead. Switching between inputs is slow with firestick remote.”
“As an upgrade to my Benq ST projector, this beauty is a great enhancement to my home theatre. The colors out of the box, as well as the great 3D presentation, are outstanding. The only small improvent I suggest is the ability to permanently turn of the pop-ups when it wants to use enhanced game mode.”
