All of the pockets are usable for anything, not just designated for key, pens or a notebook, you can fit what you need to in these pockets. The space is very well distributed as well. The side pocket for a water bottle (or bottle of wine) is thoughtfully lined with neoprene to absorb condensation without it effecting the inners of the bag.

“This backpack is the best. It's sturdy enough to stand on its own and has plenty of pockets. I went with the larger size and It's perfect as an overnight bag or for everyday use. I used it as my carry on for a flight and had the easiest time accessing my passport/boarding pass. I also looove the color and you can really tell it is high quality fabric. Even the straps are cushioned so youdon'thave to worry about those cheap-like straps digging into your shoulders. If you're still thinking about getting this backpack - do it!”
