“Outback Rock Group Publishing St. Remy Reformed Church August 2-4, 2024 Overview: The SRRC has used Group Publishing dating back to when we were doing 5 day programs. The programs have met out needs over the years. Solid subject matter to increase children (and adults) faith by interaction of the subject matter with song, Bible readings, Craft Projects and games. We were pleased that they included Projects with a Purpose encouraging students to reach out to others. This year we were so pleased with the manuals being online as a backup as part of the Introductory kit. We had occasion to use them in several different ways. This is the first time I’ve written to the company in all the years we used the program with some concerns. · The scenes needed for the Bible Adventures were very involved. We luckily had a gentleman at church who adjusted some scenes to make them work. Our concerns were with the number of materials needed to present the 25 minute lesson. · Another issue was the reuse of some scenarios duplicated from last year. The “Jesus on the Cross” was identical to last year moving it from the Bible Adventures to the Rockin’ Wrap up. We eliminated it as we have the same children and all that is involved to set it us for a 5-minute presentation. · All the programs are including more and more tech use. Again, we are a small church but lucky enough to have an experienced person to run IT. How ever the tech was scattered throughout the program and some of our presenters are not as tech savvy. We were wondering if an IT manual having all the bits and pieces in one place. Then our tech person could know where to help. Basically, as a small church, we are finding the 2 day program overloaded with material set ups that are not moving the message along. Linda Monfette Hi Linda, Here are some of my thoughts.. Children perspective: Bible Adventures at Outback Rock had alot of monologues compared to previous. This made it hard to pay attention. Staff perspective: clear separation between speaking parts and what actions are needed. A lot of it is mashed together. Even a line of space in between script and actions could prove very valuable. Use of symbols in the gutter of each page, could help staff navigate better… actors needed here or similar icon for an assistant/helper would be when a situation calls for it , if more than one is needed, place a number next to the icon. (ie. someone to play the sound where Joseph’s brothers were grumbling) speaker icon for when a soundbite needs to be played? How about this icon AND underlining & italicizing when a physical action needs to happen (ie. shifting from one place to another and highlightin/underline a new space - nudging into Josephs well) Better explanation of how supplies will be used. This doesn’t necessarily have to be printed in the book. You could have a link to a web page for more indepth text and explanations that take you through each prop or set up. Again, you really have to search for where the items will be used within the paragraphs of text. Maybe underline a supply item within the text or create a few pages dedicated to building each scene. Think Lego kit instruction books. More visuals. Not just lists. I also think it could be useful to show how others modified certain areas if less staff is available. Possibly create Facebook group page for each VBS theme where other churches could share pictures of their scenes /layouts and post what worked for them! Best, Nicole”

“The music for Outback Rock was great, The songs are so easy to learn and the kids love singing them.We incorporate the music into learning time, so they hear the music as part of a separate session. We add musical instruments to play along with music during the session time.”

“Outback Rock seemed like a half-finished program that was rushed through. There were no animals to work with, no posters, we had to separately purchase the music DVD and write a script to create a third day VBS to make up for only having a church service type event for the third day. We scrapped the service project and replaced it with a more local charity donation drive and found some crafts on Pinterest. We also didn't get much help on decorating, and there was nothing online to help. We could have spent the money we spent on this to write our own program. The only thing that was really worth having was the music.”

“I was director, but had a teacher feel that the lesions needed improvement . I don’t recall her exact words…skimpy, or … something indicating needing more . Too many songs for 2 days; and then purchasing the music seemed expensive for what we could learn in 2 days; same with crafts; weak ; Washaroo was hard; lantern not suitable for all ages. Overall B-. I liked quite a bit but not all for the money.”

“Same old material recycled from year to year, especially the music. The videos don't even match the theme. The weekend VBS is "just barely enough" which isn't Group's fault entirely, as two sessions plus the worship just isn't enough time. A strong point is the finale photo/video program which is well done.”

“It did not meet our full needs, but that does not mean it would not meet those of others. We are used to the full Easy VBS, happening M-F. There were lots of leftovers from previous VBS and items that were just okay. The kids recognized the materials, so it was like a repeat for them; it did not seem new in Bible theme and music, etc. They still had fun. We wanted to try something different due to lack of volunteer help. We really liked making the Washaroos! You always make admin easy, and I appreciate that. Thank you for what you do! God bless!”

“I was really disappointed in this one. I have always loved your VBS. I was so excited to see that you had a three day VBS but feel it was not up to the standards of Group. I would have like better mission projects and was very disappointed in the starter kit. I depend greatly on the music video and that has always been in the starter kit. I could not print extra books. I was just very disappointed in this one. I hope you will keep the three day VBS. But please improve it.”
