KickAss 400W Portable Air Conditioner For Camping Reviews

3.9 Rating 38 Reviews
Bought this in the hope it would AC my small wind up camper. It just can't keep up with the heat being radiated from the canvas. Maybe if you parked in full shade it might have a chance but not ideal to use for a small caravan. I'm going to try to use it in my Crafter van as a parking AC so I don't have to run the engine but I'm not confident it will be adequate.

Hi Chris, thanks for the feedback. Camping setups without insulation such as your wind up camper will make it harder to cool down. Parking in the shade is a great idea. Best use is to run the exhaust pipe outside to let out the hot air, and utilise the double return pipes inside your camper extended away from your AC unit to create rotational air flow in the space.

Its a great product and works as designed. Be midfull of the advertised working space, its not for large campers. Works awesome if you put the vent in the bottom of your sleeping bag.

Ok if sitting right in front of it but insufficient cooling for our small camper on a warm day. May be more useful for dehumidification on a steamy night.

your portable air con is very good in my 11ft caravan but what made it brilliant is i wraped a woollen blanket around the exhaust tubing which stopped the heat. before i done that the tubing was radiating 41 degress but after putting the blanket there it come down to 28 degress and when i done that it cooled the whole caravan down around 10 degrees lower than outside temp

Very good ac. Does exactly what it says. Do not bother if you have a big van, it’ll never cool it down or only at night time. I ran it whole outside temp was over 30deg. The air coming out was cold but won’t cool down the cab. Bit pricey tho. A few cons: the remote control is really useless, only works if you point right in front of the ac. Doesn’t work at any distance. The fan is noisy but this is from the wind moved around not the motor. But heavy and bulky. Would be great if it comes with different fan speed. Would be great if it we could plug a wired remote control so the ac could stay hidden and can be controlled on a van wall.

So, first of all let me say I got this for home use. The good: 1. FRONT DUCTS: The ducts on the front, they're a godsend. They allow me to direct the air from the aircon to anywhere I'd like. The unit overall has limited cooling capabilities but being able to concentrate them right onto my lap is tremendously helpful. I do wish those ducts were longer than 1 meter though. 2. SIZE: The unit is much more compact than any alternatives. Quite heavy though. 3. FUNCTIONAL: The unit works reliably. The cons: 1. NOISE: This thing is super loud. It's advertised as having a sleep mode that dims the LED's, but having what amounts to a truck engine right next to you while you sleep is the bigger concern. Thankfully you don't need active noise cancelling, ear muffs are good enough if you want to use this while sleeping. 2. EFFICIENCY: This aircon runs the fan at the same speed over the hot and cold side. This is a problem because any air blown over the hot side is vented outside. Any designer worth their salt would regulate the air flow over the hot side to maintain the temperature without drawing in too much air from outside. 3. COOLING POTENTIAL: Naturally, since it creates a vaccuum that draws in so much air from outside, the amount it can cool a room is limited. Better than nothing, but that's a low bar.

Honestly I've only tried it out at home not in the camper yet, so I can only tell results in oursmall laundry room about 2ms x 2.5 mts x 2.4 high room temperature was 32°Celsius. The air-conditioner was blowing cold air sub 20°c but barely did anything to room temperature. However it felt Nice and cold blowing directly on you especially when the cowling to the front is fitted as the fan blows with extra force on you. Disappointingly it made almost no differce in fan speed between low and high. I think it will give some relief at night directly blowing on you. However time will tell. My early test results, are not promising as regards anything other than that. I hope this helps someone. regards Shivers.
