Baby Chicks: Austra White Female Reviews

5 Rating 49 Reviews
I purchased two Austra Whites last year, born May 2024. They have been consistent egg layers and the creamy, silky color and smoothness of their eggs is really pretty. One has gone broody which can be a plus or minus depending on your personal preference, but both hens are friendly, treat motivated, and take no issue with my 3 young children running around. I live at high altitude in the Rocky Mountains, and although these hens have the largest combs of all my breeds, they did not experience any frost bite in an unheated coop all winter. They seem to be pretty cold tolerant hens. I highly recommend.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Austra Whites—we're delighted to hear how well they’ve done for you! They are great layers of beautiful eggs and it's great to know you're enjoying both their beauty and their productivity. It’s especially helpful to hear how they’re thriving at high altitude in an unheated coop. That kind of feedback is invaluable to others raising chickens in colder climates. Austra Whites can indeed surprise people with their resilience, even with those larger combs! We love that they’re so friendly and kid-tolerant too—that’s exactly what makes them such a great choice for family flocks. And while broodiness can be a mixed bag, it’s nice to know one of your girls is willing to go the extra mile if you ever want to hatch chicks. Thank you again for the thoughtful and detailed review and for giving your flock such a loving home!

This is our second Austra white female, and they both have had great outgoing personalities, very easy-going chickens.

This is really my 'go to' breed. The ones from this company tame so well, even to the point of being more pets than chickens. Always calm, easy to be around, and lay very, very well. This 4/28/25 shipment is set up and doing well. I haven't purchased chickens from any other company for years. I can't say enough about the Staff, and the ease to order and ease to change orders. Thanks.

I have very little chicken experience. When they grow up, my new babies will be added to a flock of 7 hens including orpingtons, jersey giants and amberlinks. The new babies are definitely more skittish, scared and easily paniced than the previous batch of admitedly extremely docile breeds. I'm concerned about that, but I trust that the babies will fit in as expected. Also, I expected polka dots would identify their breed. Unfortunately the other breed I ordered with these had polka dots too. Well... I purchased 5 chicks. Only 3 are austra whites, but I have 4 with polka dots! So I don't know who is who and won't until they grow a bit. Of course, that's half the fun of getting new babies!

Thank you for your thoughtful review, Kristi! It's wonderful to hear about your experience with your new Austra Whites. It’s perfectly normal for chicks to be a bit skittish, especially when they’re adjusting to a new environment. With time and gentle handling, they are sure to adapt and find their place in your flock. It's all part of the fun and excitement of raising chickens! As for identifying the breeds, those "polka dots" can definitely be a tricky feature to navigate. But it sounds like you'll have a fun surprise as they grow and develop their unique personalities! If you have any questions or need support along the way, we’re always here to help. Enjoy your new babies!

Our Austra White is a friendly, calm, docile bird. Easiest one to pick up and hold. Gets along with everyone and she lays a nice cream colored egg everyday!

Name: Spot Breed: Austrawhite DOB: 06/25/24 Appearance: Spot is a medium chicken currently at 6months old. She started as a little yellow chick, but has grown into a bright white chicken with deep black spots on her body. Each day that I see her I swear her spots move around. Her comb is large and bright red. Her earlobes are very pretty pink color. She laid her first egg 12/13/24. The eggs are a nice cream color. Spot has laid daily since she started. Temperament: I'm very hands on with my chickens to make them as friendly as possible. I try to hug and check on them each day since I got them. She is the most skittish of all the chicks I worked with over the summer. She will follow me around but catching her for her daily hug is a hassle. Once you have her in your arms she is an angel. She is lower on the pecking order but is NOT a loner chicken. She NEEDS companionship of her siblings to be happy. Won't go adventuring by herself. She is also very VERY quiet. She rarely makes any sounds...even after laying an egg. (No egg song) if could be because she is still young but compared to all the other chicks... she is quiet. Since we moved her to the coop with her older sister (An older hen who had lost all her sisters due to a dog attack) she is very attached to the older hen. (even though the grumpy old hen wants nothing to do with her) I always see the two of them handing out with each other. Overall I think Spot is a great hen! I think this breed is a great egg layer, pretty easy going, and likes to be with the flock. I will do a review of each chicken breed I have once they start laying. Breeds: Porcelain D'uccle, Lavender Dream EE, Green Queen EE, Olive EE, Ameribella, Sumatra, Pictures included: face, body, feet, egg, chick (And pretty earlobes!)

Thank you so much for this fantastic review of the Austra White hen. Spot is a beautiful lady and she's one lucky girl to have such an attentive and caring mama! I'm glad she is keeping your older hen company, too. We wish you and your flock many years of happiness and lots of pretty cream eggs! Give Spot some hugs from us, too!
