“All my May and June hens are laying now. The Austra Whites were the first by about 2 weeks, and one lays a double yolk nearly every day. If I never have another breed I won't mind. For this year I bought Austra Whites, Black Australorpes, Ancona, Mirabella, and Red Rhode Islands. I like them all.”
Thank you for the wonderful review of your Austra Whites! They are beautiful and efficient and with the other breeds you selected, you have everything you need for a 10/10 flock. When you get ready to stretch your wings with some new breeds, we will happily make some additional suggestions!
“I purchased two Austra Whites last year, born May 2024. They have been consistent egg layers and the creamy, silky color and smoothness of their eggs is really pretty. One has gone broody which can be a plus or minus depending on your personal preference, but both hens are friendly, treat motivated, and take no issue with my 3 young children running around. I live at high altitude in the Rocky Mountains, and although these hens have the largest combs of all my breeds, they did not experience any frost bite in an unheated coop all winter. They seem to be pretty cold tolerant hens. I highly recommend.”
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Austra Whites—we're delighted to hear how well they’ve done for you! They are great layers of beautiful eggs and it's great to know you're enjoying both their beauty and their productivity.
It’s especially helpful to hear how they’re thriving at high altitude in an unheated coop. That kind of feedback is invaluable to others raising chickens in colder climates. Austra Whites can indeed surprise people with their resilience, even with those larger combs!
We love that they’re so friendly and kid-tolerant too—that’s exactly what makes them such a great choice for family flocks. And while broodiness can be a mixed bag, it’s nice to know one of your girls is willing to go the extra mile if you ever want to hatch chicks.
Thank you again for the thoughtful and detailed review and for giving your flock such a loving home!
