“We have had quite a few varieties of chickens. There is a lot to love about most all of them. It is fun to see all the various colors of birds running and pecking about. My favorite variety of all is the Barred Plymouth Rock because they are so good in our climate. We have a few nights that freeze in winter (about five to twelve?) and our summers are long and quite warm, with average temps in the mid nineties. These girls tolerate it all. Maybe on the hottest days there will be a few less eggs and same during the shortest of winter days. Overall they produce well and, after their first laying cycle, they lay larger eggs. Great temperament, great bird! The other birds are cool, but they do not lay like these.”
What a fantastic review and great picture! We couldn’t help but smile reading about your lively flock and your clear admiration for the Barred Plymouth Rocks. They really are the dependable workhorses of the chicken world; steady layers, easygoing, and tough enough to handle both the chilly nights and those toasty mid-nineties days without complaint. We love how you put it—the other birds may be cool, but the Rocks are the real overachievers of the bunch. Thanks for sharing your experience and for giving your hens such a great home!

“Amazingly friendly breed. Bertha LOVED to be held/handled, pet, perch on your arm- you name it. Very sweet hen with an old lady personality (mostly docile but didn't hesitate to show the flock who was the boss). Very pretty too. This was the perfect hen for a newbie chicken owner.”
