Baby Chicks: Barred Plymouth Rock - SR Reviews

4.9 Rating 114 Reviews
We purchased our first group of chickens from my pet chicken in August of 2015. I loved them then and I adore them now. At almost three years our barred rocks and plymouth rocks have endured harsh winters and blazing summers and are still egg laying machines. My youngest just completed her first year of 4-H and earned a 4th place in showmanship with her favorite Barred Rock. Calm and docile and extremely healthy. I couldn't have asked for a better group of birds. We just purchased Ducks in April from my pet chicken and they have been wonderful. Fantastic site with healthy, show worthy flocks.

We had them in Utah, they were great layers of large brown eggs. They had a coop they automatically went into at dusk and then we locked them in for safety. They had large laying boxes and often would run into the coop during the day and lay an egg. Our temperatures were from 100° to -10° with about 3ft. of snow. When it was extremely cold we put a red heat lamp on in the ceiling, gave them extra feed and fresh vegetables on their list of foods they could have. Sometimes if they were in too long we let the out and they would go into the hay barn or into the horses stalls and pick through the shavings. Our horses don't mind them at all. from 100°

Purchased them on November 3rd, 2017. They are so sweet, so well groomed, and have huge personalities. I cannot wait to order more soon.

We have a small mixed flock of 5 different breeds. The two barred rocks are the most friendly and first to come out and greet us. They are both the bosses and make sure they get treats first and will give a reminder peck to the others. They let us hold them and follow us everywhere. They are definitely my favorite birds. Not to mention - reallly beautiful hens. Started to lay at 6 months and reliable 5-6X/week

We bought 7 chicks chosen by our chicken-obsessed daughter, all different breeds (1 of each): Andalusian, Buff Brahma, Australorp, Buff Orpington, Golden Cuckoo Marans, an Easter Egger, and a Barred Rock. They're all lovely and there WAS a plugged vent problem with the Brahma as a baby, but that was fixed easily. The star of the show is our Barred Rock. She's positively gorgeous, and "like a beagle" according to my eldest. She is positively gorgeous, she has a great personality, she's assertive but not bossy, and she's a good hunter. She practically leaps into our hands for attention, has a lovely voice, and is semi-frightening hunting live mealworms when we give the chicks treats. The Barred Rock is perfect if you are first-time, second-time, third-time... oh, what the heck, I'll just say it: Barred Rocks totally, well, rock!

I started my flock with Barred Rocks from My Pet Chicken, and years later they are still my favorite! They are always the first to jump in my lap, and they will even take a nap there! Mine also consistently lay throughout the winter. I love this breed!!

Our Aisling is the queen of the coop and she keeps everyone in check. Just added our new spring chicks to the older girls and she makes sure that everyone stays in line. She loves hugs after she's laid an egg and you happen to be there. I always know her egg since she has purple calcium spots on them, easter eggs with out the work on my part :)

We named our barred rock Hermione, because she was the smartest and most inquisitive chick in the bunch. She's only one of two hens that come up to me and begs to be held and loved on. She knows to approach only after the alpha hen is done with her hugs and pets before tugging on my pants leg. She's an excellent layer of large pinkish tan eggs, even through the heat of our Texas summers and not so cold winters.
