Baby Chicks: Barred Plymouth Rock - SR Reviews

4.9 Rating 111 Reviews
We have a small mixed flock of 5 different breeds. The two barred rocks are the most friendly and first to come out and greet us. They are both the bosses and make sure they get treats first and will give a reminder peck to the others. They let us hold them and follow us everywhere. They are definitely my favorite birds. Not to mention - reallly beautiful hens. Started to lay at 6 months and reliable 5-6X/week

We bought 7 chicks chosen by our chicken-obsessed daughter, all different breeds (1 of each): Andalusian, Buff Brahma, Australorp, Buff Orpington, Golden Cuckoo Marans, an Easter Egger, and a Barred Rock. They're all lovely and there WAS a plugged vent problem with the Brahma as a baby, but that was fixed easily. The star of the show is our Barred Rock. She's positively gorgeous, and "like a beagle" according to my eldest. She is positively gorgeous, she has a great personality, she's assertive but not bossy, and she's a good hunter. She practically leaps into our hands for attention, has a lovely voice, and is semi-frightening hunting live mealworms when we give the chicks treats. The Barred Rock is perfect if you are first-time, second-time, third-time... oh, what the heck, I'll just say it: Barred Rocks totally, well, rock!

I started my flock with Barred Rocks from My Pet Chicken, and years later they are still my favorite! They are always the first to jump in my lap, and they will even take a nap there! Mine also consistently lay throughout the winter. I love this breed!!

Our Aisling is the queen of the coop and she keeps everyone in check. Just added our new spring chicks to the older girls and she makes sure that everyone stays in line. She loves hugs after she's laid an egg and you happen to be there. I always know her egg since she has purple calcium spots on them, easter eggs with out the work on my part :)

We named our barred rock Hermione, because she was the smartest and most inquisitive chick in the bunch. She's only one of two hens that come up to me and begs to be held and loved on. She knows to approach only after the alpha hen is done with her hugs and pets before tugging on my pants leg. She's an excellent layer of large pinkish tan eggs, even through the heat of our Texas summers and not so cold winters.

Our hen, Roxie, has an excellent temperament, and her laying production is perfect. She lays this beautiful light-brown eggs with the small white paint speckles, the right size too, not too small, she lays very consistently. She's got an impressive display of feathers and a hearty comb. She is top of the pecking order but she doesn't abuse power either, she is accepting to being handled, very polite during treat time. This bird is a must for anyone just starting out in the chicken world.

Gwen, our Barred Rock, is everyones favorite out of roughly 40 laying hens. She is an excellent egg producer. She is at the top of the pecking order but still fair to her flock mates. She's proven to be hardy here in the hot Florida climate. But best of all her personality is HILARIOUS. Gwen is either in our laps begging for treats or peaking in the windows to see when we will be back outside. Very impressed with my three past orders of chicks from MPC and their customer service.
