Baby Chicks: Buckeye Female Reviews

4.9 Rating 29 Reviews
We got 2 of these beautiful ladiesā€¦1 is very social and friendly -we named her Miss Blondieā€¦still not named the other one yet. They are 11 days old today. Growing like a weed, healthy and well. I opted to vaccinate all the chicks, and gave them all Meyers grow gel, and use Kruses super chick medicated started feed.

Healthy little chicks (2 Buckeyes out of a mixed batch). 3 weeks in and one is definitely more daring than the other - will rush at hands, so I'm hoping it's not a Roo!

While not up to snuff for show and competition - my Buckeyes are smart, docile foragers. My two roosters, Gudetama and Sasaki, work together to keep down mice and warning the hens of hawks. Gudetama is especially kind to his hens as he ensures they always get treats first and distributes them if there is a fight. Even their clucking is unique as the flock sounds like a pack of raptors. It's like watching Jurassic Park in my own backyard.

These are the friendliest girls in our flock both to humans and other breeds. We have never tried to tame our birds, but these ladies naturally enjoy being around everyone. They are hardy in the heat of Texas as well and lay plenty of eggs.

I live in Michigan and wanted to make sure I chose breeds that could handle the weather. My buckeye loves the cold weather. She is friendly, curious, and smart (for a chicken!). She figured out that I leave the door open when I'm refilling the water and sneaks into the house...I find her by the dog food of course. She is a great forager and I've noticed that when one of my hens gets too far from the flock and is calling out, she goes and brings that hen back to the flock. This is really an under-rated bird, but a great choice if you looked into RIRs but heard too many comments about them being mean. Also, my Buckeye has caught a couple of voles when other chickens just stood by dumbfounded, so if you hear they are good mousers, I would believe it!

I have one buckeye, and she has the most energy and personality of the whole flock! She is at the bottom of the pecking order, but her speed, curiosity, and fearlessness always get her to the treats first. She has beautiful mahogany feathers, and a sleek form. She has never been broody in the 2+ years she has been laying while I have lost track of how many times some of my Australorps have been. I would recommend this breed if you're looking for some liveliness in your backyard - just make sure they have enough space to run around!

My Buckeye is the only one of the girls who runs to me even if I don't have food. She'd rather hang out with me than with the other hens. While gardening, she is right there making sure a single worm doesn't get by her. Even if she wanders into the house looking for a treat, she's well-mannered (whereas the Dorking of the bunch will be jumping off the walls) and cuddly. If I could have roosters where I live, Buckeyes would be my choice to breed. Very well-suited to Ohio's harsh winters.

My ideal chicken is dual purpose, cold hardy, smart, and true free range . Buckeyes have been the best of the 20+ breeds i tried. ( followed closely by the Dominique) the buckeyes i own have taken to foraging as if it is as ingrained as a duckling eating grass. My other breeds are lazy, preferring handouts. Buckeyes scout the yard for bugs all day long. Even as wee tiny chicks they figured out to scale the rock wall to roam the yard. Not one of my other breeds ever considered that ( noboy thought of it for 6 yrs) I bought 4, one accidentally a rooster ( purchased locally) he is sweet and leads his girls well
