“these are great tough chickens.. i have one that is 15 years old... if the door is open she comes in the house.
she is so friendly and fun. i want a new batch !!!”
“Our Buckeye Gimpy got her name as she has been lame since a young age. Her gate has deteriorated over time, but she never lets it stop her. In recent years, her eyesight has increasingly failed, and she is now blind. Despite her ailments, she holds her own in the flock, always getting her fair share of greens and treats (though we make sure she does), she is the first one out on a super cold or blazing hot day, and she leads the way to us whenever she hears a footstep, always ready (and asking) for a petting. When I tuck the girls in at night, she responds to my question with a happy gurgle to tell me she is okay and settled in just fine in her own special box. She is getting old and slow, and I expect that we will not enjoy her company for much longer. When she is gone, I will definitely look into getting more buckeyes--for their unwavering toughness and determination, calmness, curiosity, and all-around sweetness. If you try some, I suspect you will agree with me that there is a good reason that this heritage breed is still around. These are keepers.”
“I've had my Buckeye ladies for about two years. Very docile and attentive to their surroundings. Good layer even in single digit winter temps. I plan on buying a rooster and more hens.”
“I PURCAHSED 2 BUCKEYES ALONG WITH OTHER VARIETIES AND THEY WERE LOVELY. HOWEVER ,THEY DIED AT 7 MO. LAYING ONE EGG EACH. EVERYONE ELSE WAS FINE,BUT IT SEEMED LAYING THE VERY LARGE EGG KILLED THEM.I FOUND THEM JUST OUTSIDE THE NEST BOX. THEY DIED WITHIN DAYS OF EACH OTHER. SO SAD.”
“It's been 6 years since I received my adorable Buckeye chick! We named her Lauren and she's still laying eggs and entertaining us! She's done extremely well in some pretty cold Pa. Winters. She definitely has a mind of her own and I will be ordering more this year. She's just a really cool chicken and the pic shown does not do them justice at all. They're gorgeous. The color is amazing. They're correct about being good mousers too! ewwwww...Lauren and her Sussex friend are brutal with the mice.”
