Baby Chicks: Black Australorp Female Reviews

4.7 Rating 77 Reviews
3 years ago, I ordered 9 Australorp pullets and 1 cockerel for my first venture into chickens. Perfect choice. The chickens grew to be prodigious egg-layers and in the flock, with various personalities ranging to one or two that would fly up to my shoulder. Sadly, they've all gone to feed a very sly and hungry fox, but if egg production and ease of raising is your aim, you can't go wrong with this breed. BTW, when the sun hits their feathers, the iridescence is striking.

A really sweet bird, great for kids, and a great layer. They are curious, kind and low key. Very happy with this bird.

My black Australorp Raven is so beautiful! She is black with iridescent green shimmering feathers. All my three chicks arrived in good health, and the Australorp is friendly, beautiful, and healthy. She is very soft when I pick her up and my dog and I love her. Of course, she is a good layer as well. Thank you to mypetchicken for their large, healthy birds! I will be back.

I ordered 8 chicks and 4 of them were Australorps. All were to be hens since that's what I needed. When they arrived, 2 chicks died in the first 2 days. Very upsetting, but when I called customer service, they were very nice, responsive, and refunded the money for one of them. Ok, 7 1/2 weeks later and "Houston, we have a problem." It is very obvious that one of my hens is not a hen. He has a full comb and waddles at about 1/4th of an inch and growing. I can't keep him much longer. He is doing the posturing and chest bump with the 5 hens surviving. I do not want to raise chicks, I want eggs. So, in conclusion, the 8 hens I ordered are now down to 5 hens and one bossy rooster reeking havoc. But as I said, my dealings with customer service was polite and empathetic regarding my 2 sick/dead chicks. And, ultimately, I'm stuck with a rooster I have to find a home for.

She was a good layer and not too skittish with people but started tormenting her Easter Egger flockmate. Got downright vicious.

I purchased 5 chicks from MyPetChicken and they are coming up on 5 weeks old. All arrived healthy and peeping. I got a Black Australorp, Easter Egger, Speckled Sussex, Golden Buff and White Silkie. I didn't think I'd be able to tell them apart until they were older. I was wrong. They all arrived looking completely different from each other. Almost daily there is something new to note, either by appearance or in what they're doing. I carefully selected my breeds (or so I believe) based on them being friendly and good egg layers. I'm happy to report they are all friendly. The Australorp thinks she is a dog. She was first to jump out of the brooder and straight to my lap. She'll drop her feet out from under her and loves to be petted for longer than I can pet her. The Easter Egger is right behind her with this behavior. The Silkie does as well but she's size challenged still and can't quite get out of the brooder on her own. The SS was a bit shy at first, but has come around...I think she's actually the leader of the pack. The one who took the longest to warm up, who loves her independence and thinks she is the boss where this is concerned - is the Golden Buff; however, she was always the most alert of the bunch. The others can be face down eating and could not be bothered, but the GB will not take her eyes off what's going on around her. She sees everything. They are definitely all unique personalities. Even if they did all look alike, I'd be able to tell them apart. They have been a joy to raise thus far. Just wanted to say thank you, MPC.

Four years ago I ordered six chicks from My Pet Chicken and two were Australorps. These ladies are so much fun. They are beautiful, funny, sassy when they need to be, lay gorgeous eggs and I have had zero problems with them. They are now 4 years old, still going strong and laying a few times a week, they have been healthy and are the best cuddlers ever. And they can still kick a squirrels butt if they need to chase one away from their snacks! They can be a bit bossy sometimes yet its nothing my queen hen, who is a Buff Orpington, cannot handle. I plan to get a few more of these in the future. Best ladies ever!

My girl was sooo soft and smart. She stuck to the other chick that ended up being a roo and got her status at the top of the hierarchy by association. At times she wanted to be friendly, but still cautious. I ended up re-homing her with the roo because they were so attached to each other, so I'm not sure how she would have been as a layer. But she did peck at red more readily than the other chickens (she pulled feathers) which was concerning and would make me think hard on whether I'd want another in the future. I think the answer is yes, because I really miss her in my flock. Smart, pretty girl.
