Baby Chicks: Black Copper Marans Female Reviews

4.8 Rating 142 Reviews
Bought these chicks spring 2018. They showed up in great condition and all survived.which was awesome The low rating for is the color of the eggs from this line. Unfortunately i was super dissapointed when these girls starting laying the egg color (the reason i purchased this breed) was not the rich chocolate brown you expect from a black copper maran. The eggs color from all of my girls is near a welsummer colored egg. Super dissapointed it is now 7+months later and still not good color, has to be the genetics or what the ones i received were breed to.

Zuri is a sweet little girl! Great black color, copper neck feathers, and best of all, she gave me the most lovely dark reddish brown eggs starting this week! I didn't expect them so soon, she's only about 5.5 months old and it is winter! But they are just gorgeous, darker than I expected. Another bonus: she is very watchful and is one of the first to find any potential danger (where we are it is hawks) and alerts to tell the others to hide. She isn't loud otherwise though. Very calm and a good member of the flock.

My French Black Copper Marans started laying at exactly 6 months (hatched in May). She is sweet as can be and will jump up and sit on my lap in hopes of getting some dried meal worms from me. Her eggs are medium to large in size and a dark brown with some speckles. I was pleasantly surprised at her friendly nature and consistent egg laying (5 per week). She isn't head of the flock, but perhaps second, and she always comes out in the evening to help escort the polish into the coop (after I scoop the polish up out of the tree she tries to roost in). I couldn't be happier with her addition to the flock.

Marans is a breed originally from France. Marans is the name of a breed of French hen from the region of the small town called : "Marans" (Charente-Maritime) near the Marais Poitevin. It is one of the very good French breeds for two purposes, good laying (150 to 200 eggs per year), rustic and solid which has the particularity of laying eggs called "extra-roux" the most beautiful and the darkest ones that are in color and brilliance, which earned her the nickname "Golden Egg Hen" Thank you to be honest of the history as a breeder it's important to be informed on origins.

We got our chicks (a mixed flock)in the beginning of June and by the end of October she has been laying about 4 eggs a week. The eggs are not as dark and chocolatey as I hoped but there still beautiful, a chestnut with chocolate speckles. She also the most approachable and one of my sweetest chickens I have. Black Copper Marans are now one of my favorite breeds!
