“What a great hen! We wanted a BCM for those beautiful chocolate eggs, but this is also a great all around breed for a backyard flock. Ours is very easy to handle and is usually right behind our two friendliest hens, an Orpington and a Sussex, to greet us at the gate. She doesn’t love being picked up but she’ll tolerate it. She’s much happier following us around instead. While I didn’t get a BCM for looks, that was only out of ignorance on my part. She is gorgeous! She has so much purple and green iridescence in her feathers, you can’t help but stop what you’re doing to watch her strut around the yard. She laid her first egg at 21 weeks old. They’re a beautiful dark brown, probably a 5 on the Marans scale (right in the middle of MPC’s reference image). And she lays a lot of them! She’s been laying for about 3 weeks and has maybe taken three days off. I was worried about having a larger, feather footed black chicken here in Arizona, but she’s been handling the brutal summer heat surprisingly well (a mister and fan helps a lot). Overall, this is definitely a breed I’ll always want to have in my flock.”
Thank you so much for your thoughtful review of the Black Copper Marans! They truly are a beautiful bird, especially in the sunlight. Here's hoping she continues to be a great layer for you and gives you lots of pretty eggs!
