Baby Chicks: Cuckoo Bluebar Blue-Egger Female Reviews

4.6 Rating 70 Reviews
This chicken is my only blue egger, and she does not disappoint. Every day, I go to the nesting box to find a little light blue egg sitting in the shavings. Jazzy, while she is a little skittish at times, loves to be held and goes crazy over parsley... she's just a great chicken.

Our Bluebar is our most friendly chicken of our flock. She loves perching on our shoulders. She took a nap in my hoodie before laying her first egg at 22 weeks old. She is sneaky, she'll wait to get a treat and comes from behind when our other chickens aren't looking. Very curious. She's at the bottom of our pecking order but super friendly, sweet and quiet. Very worth it.

I recently added a blue cuckoo bluebar to my little flock - and she is my newest favorite. She is active and curious and perhaps even "clever" on a chicken scale. She's a consistent layer of small blue/green tinted eggs. At first she laid in the nesting boxes, but after a week started selecting other spots, the far side of the coop, behind the coop. It's like Easter everyday seeing if I can find her little blue egg.

I love my girl! She just turned 6 months old and has been laying for about 3 weeks. She’s always been super curious and sweet natured. Near the top of the pecking order but not aggressive. Just confident. She’s not as big as my Australorp but she doesn’t seem to notice. They have equal confidence levels haha. She’s fairly quiet and always up to her own thing. Strays from the flock more than they others. Frequently find her on the roof but just chilling up there. Love her! Lays a blue tinted egg 4x a week!

My two hens are almost mature now and each has a different comb style. Belle has what I expected with a comb and bouffant like a Cream Legbar, but Bella is different. Her comb is fuller and no bouffant. As this is a new breed , I guess variations may occur.

We received several healthy chicks from MPC about 18 months ago (February 2020). The ordering and shipping process was smooth and the customer service was outstanding (I contacted them with several questions)! Our Cuckoo Bluebar is beautiful (wayyyy prettier than the pictures on the MPC website!). However, she is definitely our most schizophrenic chicken; one day she is running between our feet begging for treats and the next day she is terrified of us. She began laying at 19 weeks and initially gave us 5-6 medium/large, VERY light/pale blue eggs/week (ranging between 50-62 grams). However, after a few months of laying she went broody and, even though we were able to break her broodiness in just one day, she stopped laying for six weeks. Unfortunately, she has not laid consistently since that time. She didn’t lay a single egg for the entire winter (we live in MI and do not add lights or heat) and now averages 1 egg every 4-14 days (very irregular) and about every third or fourth egg is a fairy egg or has a brittle shell (none of our other hens have this problem). If you want some color in your basket, consider getting an EE instead. Our EE (also from MPC) has a wonderful disposition and is a fantastic layer of large/XL richly colored blue-green eggs.

Nibbles is a goofball. She likes to try to taste everything, and if something looks different, like new boots with a chicken print, she will try to nibble on those, as well. She's pretty friendly, you can pet her, but she doesn't enjoy being picked up. She will tolerate it, though. She lays blue eggs with a hint of aqua, which I could only really tell because I got a Super Blue Egg Layer and compared the two eggs. They are beautiful, though! She's in the middle of the pecking order, so she can take care of herself. Definitely a great chicken to have!

I ordered 5 chicks, 2 Blue Favaucana's, 2 Cuckoo Bluebar Blue Eggers and a Mottled Conchin Bantam. All 5 chicks arrived energetic, happy, and chirping away! It was November, they were tucked in a small box with a heat pack. Of the 5 now i weeks old females, the 2 Cuckoos are by FAR the most flighty. My sweet little Conchin Bantam is such love, the Favaucana's have eased up significantly, one much more than the other, but the Cuckoos have a long way to go. One is named Suzy Sue, the other Richard, (both are females lol) and while Suzy Sue has calmed down a little bit by now and will tolerate being held for a couple minutes on occasion, Richard just about has a coronary any time I go near her. I give them a bit of Grubblies a couple times a week to try to make friends and everyone gets so excited, that I think I'm making headway but nope. I try to give her a little scratch while she's snacking and she takes off. But I've raised chicks before so I know its still early. I've had chicks personalities completely change and go from just like this, to becoming complete smugglers once they start laying. I hope this is the case because wow are they cute. They are so funny looking! They have these skinny faces with a Mohawk/ Pompadour, and their chirp sounds more like someone whistling between their teeth. They definitely have character! The color is gorgeous. In fact Richard is named Richard because she has this puff of light gray against the darker grey which reminded me of how older men are called Silver foxes and the first name that came to mind was Richard Gere. I'm very pleased with them so far , I know it takes time to adjust. They are healthy and active and I'm looking forward to the weather warming and being able to put them outside in our big coop and run with the rest of our flock.
