Baby Chicks: Silver Cuckoo Marans Female Reviews

4.6 Rating 23 Reviews
My Silver Cuckoo Marans, Sylvie, was 2 days shy of 26 weeks old died of a prolapse vent. When I found her with her vent out I took the action of a warm bath in a tub and did everything I could for her but she died sometime during the night. The next day I found the plug for my perfect bucket heater was unplugged. So there had to be the struggle of the other hens I have to have peck at the vent. The only thing I could have done was be there when it first happened and took action then. But as a pet chicken owner we cannot be with our hens 24/7 and things like this happen. Either way her loss seems to be affecting my other 8 birds demeanor. Someone at tractor supply told me mix grower feed and layer feed for a few weeks so the birds that are later to lay can transition while the other birds that are laying get their needs. I started getting my first eggs on Feb 10, and Silve laid on Feb 27 and was one of the last hen of 9 to lay her first egg. Regardless of my loss each and every breed gets 5 stars no matter what color an egg might be and Mother Nature. Great website

Love Olive, our silver cuckoo maran. She just started laying in the 21st week, the first among our 4 chickens. The first time she laid 2 small eggs on the same day (on thanksgiving day), which was awesome. Then her second egg was double the size, a nice large mid-dark brown egg with speckles. Get this breed, they’re great birds.

We've had Silver Cuckoo Marans for about 4 years now, and just ordered two more. They're good layers with a pleasant, friendly disposition. We get about 5 eggs a week from a 1-year old Maran, and they produce well as they age, in our experience.

I'm super happy with this Maran! She just started laying a nice dark colored egg, just what I hoped for! She's not the brightest bulb of the group, but she is calm, friendly and quiet. I'd definitely recommend!

This breed was recommended by my father in law who gave us our first batch of Golden Cuckoo marans. I love when we get the darker eggs but I really love how sweet they are. When I walk into their yard they follow me everywhere. They will even pile up on the gate when they see me walk out of the house. I ordered 10 hens all lived but one ended up being a rooster. He found a good home. I didn't need another roo since I have a golden cucko roo now who is awesome. The silver cuckoo hens I receive from my pet chicken are even prettier than the pic on the website. Would recommend :)

I have ordered several of this breed from MyPetChicken and they've all arrived healthy & developed into wonderful hens that lay a nice, dark brown egg. They add a lot of color to the egg cartons when I sell my eggs.

Bought 2 chicks back in the fall and was looking forward to their dark chocolate colored eggs. They are just starting to lay and the eggs are a medium tan. My RIRs lay darker eggs then these. So I’m a bit disappointed. Still nice hens, fit in with the rest of my flock.
