Baby Chicks: Cream Legbar Female Reviews

4.5 Rating 107 Reviews
Kindest bird I’ve owned. She is my cheapest egg layer. Lays eggs consistently, all year, and twice as long compared to all other breeds I’ve owned. Still lays through the winter without a light. I have a weed season and my other chickens stop laying when they are fed with nothing but weeds, but she keeps on laying. Forages great without destroying the garden. All my other birds make the garden disappear. You can’t even tell she lives in the garden by how delicate she is with her fancy grazing.. I call her my end of the world bird. I have 1/3 acre so plenty of room to graze but I bet she’d still lay consistently with minimal grazing area without supplemental feed. The problem with her, is her ability to fly and escape. She loves her freedom and if she doesn’t have it, she will get it. She can jump out and fly out of an 8’ enclosure. She will escape just to run up the hill then run and fly down. Then manages to find her way back in and out herself to bed. I’ve almost had to give her away because I can’t keep her in my yard and the neighbors don’t appreciate their mulch moved to their grass.

My cream legbar is 8 months of age. Shes not very friendly. She is very stand offish and skittish. She has yet to lay at 8 months old.

It must be quite disappointing, waiting on eggs this long. Unfortunately, some chickens will start laying at a later age when maturing when days are short. Hopefully, those beautiful blue eggs will be worth it! Here is a some information on when you can expect your hens to lay: https://www.mypetchicken.com/blogs/faqs/when-do-chickens-start-laying-eggs

Our girl Monkey is about 9 weeks old and is the cutest little thing. She's both fiercely independent *and* extremely friendly (jumps right up onto my shoulder and hunkers down for a nap, but also loves doing her own thing!), and is also quite the lap chicken. We'll definitely be adding another to our flock in the spring. Fantastic breed and blue eggs - what more could you ask for?

I have 2 cream legbars from MPC, one from 2019, the other from 2020. Ginger and Pecan are stunning birds and lay beautiful blue eggs. Both are quite quirky and have unique personalities. Pecan prefers to lay her eggs anywhere other than the coop- her favorite spot is inside my washing machine. She will fly over the fence and yell until someone lets her in (and puts a soft towel in the washing machine) so she can lay her egg. She is small, but lays a large egg nearly daily. Both are very watchful and alert and excel at alerting to predators when free ranging. A fun breed and I definitely recommend having a couple.

She's about 10 weeks now and so far, so good. She is one of the more friendly pullets in my mixed flock of five. She comes running when she sees me, will jump on my lap/shoulders, and doesn't mind being picked up. Her crest looks great and people always comment on how cool she looks!

Let me start by saying I am very happy with our order of 5 chicks from MPC. We received our tiny chicks in April and now by October they are all healthy girls laying wonderful eggs. Our cream legbar has always been my favorite - despite being on the smaller size and generally very calm, she is brave and always challenges our marans girl who's the top of the pecking order. She's not aggressive at all though and is very calm with us, she's also very friendly with my toddler and lets her pick her up or feed her by hand. We couldn't be happier.

Purchased one of these girls in my last order. Worse hen I have ever come across. Hatched late August. Overwintered well, but was last to begin laying the following spring, actually around June! The smallest eggs you can imagine,(my grandfather would have said a crow snuck in and laid an egg!) On top of that she went boody 2 weeks after starting to lay these lilliputian eggs. Nothing and I mean nothing worked to break her.Tried to make the best of the situation and put some fertile eggs under her to see if she could hatch them out. Don't you know she kicked the eggs out of the nest! Finally mid July, she rejoined the living and started laying her tiny eggs again. Then last week (August) she goes broody again!!! Stays in he nest box all day except twice a day gets up, eats, drinks, and poops, then it's back to bed! To top it off she mean! Bullies Orpingtons, Rocks and even a very large Austerlope thats almost twice her size. Don't bother with this breed. If you would like pretty blue eggs stick with the EE.
