not as hearty as we would like. Journey was tough and we lost a few too many. Don't have enough experience with these girls to know for sure if we would purchase again.

We’re truly sorry to hear that your Delaware chicks didn’t meet expectations in terms of hardiness, and we understand how difficult it is to lose any of them, especially after such anticipation for them to arrive. We appreciate you giving them a chance, and we’re here to answer any questions as you continue to gain experience with this breed.

I assisted my Mother a few months back in selecting hens to supplement her aging flock on her farm in Florida, the Delaware is one that I honestly added on a whim, being available, a heat tolerant bird with a straight comb and white to absorb less sunlight I figured it would be a good choice for the opressive heat of most of the Florida year. She was sweet as a chick, curious and calm right out of the box, traveled well too with 36 others, not a single loss which was fantastic. I went back to visit when the birds were around 8 weeks old and I was SHOCKED at how absolutely LOVELY the Delaware pullet turned out to be! She would come right up to me when I squated down to do something in their run or somewhere else on the farm. My parents are not the type to spend a lot of time socializing with their birds with a busy farm and full time jobs yet this hen was friendly and interested in interacting with me right away! I left the farm to come home and knew I had to add one to my own flock. This breed does not get enough attention! The black baring around the neck is subtle and almost like little black freckles. They're a very unique looking hen compared to most of the flock in blacks, browns, or buffs and different is always fun. They're also one of the most economical breeds I've ever selected which is always a bonus! I have now added two female Delaware chicks to my own brooder and while they are still very little, they're already showing the same calm and curious attitute even at two weeks old so I doubt the previous experience was a fluke! We added Silkies to the brooder just this past Tuesday and the Delawares were mothering the silkies showing them where food was and letting them stand under them like hens which was funny and a very unexpected surprise in chicks so young. I've only ever seen such nurturing behavior in my Faverolles before, these are just really nice birds. I'm very pleased with them so far. If you're looking for a friendly, good layer that's different and less common in a backyard flock definitely give this breed a try!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! We're thrilled to hear how much you've enjoyed the Delaware breed, from their heat tolerance to their friendly and curious nature. It’s amazing to hear how well they traveled and how nurturing they’ve been, even as chicks. We're glad they’ve made such a great addition to both your mother’s and your own flock! Thank you for the recommendation—Delawares are indeed a hidden gem!

I am a Delaware lover and this was my first time mail ordering them. I could not be happier! This saved me time and heart break of hatching my own. Since I don't have a rooster any more, I will be ordering my chicks. Thank you "My pet Chickens" they were perfect and healthy!

One of the two Delaware chicks arrived dead in the box - we had a total of 8 dead out of 12 that we ordered. The chicks arrived quickly and we picked them up within 30 minutes of getting the call from the post office. Doubt we'll order chicks in the mail again. We had several die in a Fall order as well despite ten years of positive experiences with My Pet Chicken. I'm not sure if it's an issue with them or the Post Office, but I'd rather just get them locally and not deal with the loss due to shipping.

Thank you Celia for leaving a review of your Delaware chicks. We are delighted to hear that they all are doing great! It's always a fun challenge trying to determine which chick is which on your order! We have created a Baby Chick Identification Tool that shows photos of each baby chick breed we carry that might help. https://www.mypetchicken.com/about-chickens/chicken-pictures/baby-chick-pictures.aspx
