Baby Chicks: Mottled Houdan Female Reviews

4.8 Rating 17 Reviews
I ordered 25 baby chickies and they arrived on Thursday all are doing great. No posts butt. No lethargy, all running around. One of my new babies is the melted houdon, so adorable can't wait to see her crazy hair feathers come in! 3 chicks ordered did not hatch but my pet chicken replaced all 3 with my picks even though the ones I picked were more in value than the ones that didn't hatch which I did not expect. There was also an extra baby as well! All of them are so cute and happy and healthy will recommend to anyone wanting to order chickens!

Thank you for sharing such a kind and detailed review! We’re so glad to hear that all of your baby chicks are doing so well and full of energy. Your little Mottled Houdan is going to be such a character once those fluffy head feathers start coming in — they’re always a favorite. We were more than happy to make sure you got the chicks you wanted, and it’s wonderful to know you were pleasantly surprised. Wishing you so much joy as you raise your new flock, and thank you for recommending us so warmly!

My Mottled Houdan is one of the cuddliest chickens I have ever had! She is so pretty. Every time she molts her white spots grow. Her crest and beard are never so big to block her site. She has the silliest personality. She does go broody every summer but it isn’t impossible to snap her out of it. I can’t believe this breed isn’t more popular. Whenever I sit down in the chicken yard she runs at full speed to get a place on my lap. She just turned 3 and is very healthy. She’s lower on the pecking order. Even my Salmon Faverolles looks at her like she’s crazy! My flock lets her do her own thing though and nobody gives her any trouble. Her name is Dottie Le Pew, being French and all.

Two of the three I ordered didn't make it. The last one left is strong, healthy and so precious. I love her expressions when she sees me at her brood box. I wish the other two lived but very happy with the one who's left.

2 of the chicks I ordered were mottled houdans. One arrived deceased. The other, Puffy, is my children's favorite chicken, and extremely tolerant of them. She likes to ride in the wagon and sit in your lap. She lays small white eggs on occasion, outside the nesting box.

Our mottled houdan is our absolute favorite hen! She is exceptionally sweet and gets along with all the chickens. She also comes running up to us every time she sees us and will pull on our pant leg if we are paying attention to another chicken. She hasn't started laying yet that we know of, but we just love her & she is definitely more like a pet & sneaks inside if we leave the door cracked. She will get on our lap if we sit down and waits at our feet to be picked up. Sometimes she even perches on our shoulder if she can get to it. When we had another chicken that was hurt she just cuddled with her, while some of the other chickens were mean.

We chose these as a substation on hatch day. I am so glad I did! Our two (Turnip and Estelle) are hands down crowd favorites. Turnip is my husband’s best friend! People are constantly asking me what breed they are. Beautiful and very friendly. I call them our redneck parrots! I will always have Houdans from now on!!
