Baby Chicks: Mottled Cochin Bantam Female Reviews

4.9 Rating 59 Reviews
We got the batch of straight run. Anyone want a Rooster? At least we got 4 hens out of 9. The Rooster babies are fighting and screeching at 4 1/2 wks. They have been making their wimpy attempts at crowing for two weeks now. Bad weather to be trying to separate and maintain warm spaces. Oh the joys of Chickenhood :)

Our Mottled Cochin is one of my favorites. She's gorgeous, with green-tinted feathers that shimmer in the sun. She's at the bottom of our pecking order with our Silkie, but overall just a gem. Not flighty, but indifferent to being held.

My little Mia is awesome! She was always the most outgoing one of the chicks that I ordered. She was the only mottled cochin, but I wish I had ordered several more. She has personality galore and is very vocal when she doesn't get her way. When I'm feeding them dried worm treats, if she doesn't get hers right away she jumps up to grab my hand to let me know that she doesn't appreciate having to wait. I plan to order more of the mottled cochins soon. By the way, she's one of my best layers, laying at least 5 times a week! She's just amazing in every way. I don't mind that I had to pay the extra price to have her sexed because she's worth every penny to me!

Victoria is hilarious. She grabbed my boyfriend's finger so hard the other day that he made her stumble when he pulled his hand back in surprise. She just keeps going after him and it makes me fall over laughing every time since she's my baby. She hasn't started laying yet, but she's such an awesome chicken. She holds her own with my Easter Eggers and Buff Brahmas. I love her puffy tail and feathered feet. If I had known what an awesome chicken she would be, I would have tried to get a few more hens from this breed. I might get some more next year if they're still being offered. She'll sit with me on the steps for attention and loves to try to fly out of the run area.

Miss Swimsuit: it sounds like she’s in a pageant, and if she was, she’d be a holy terror of a contestant. She is in charge of everything in her line of sight, the bossiest baby I have ever known. First to flap/fly, first to hop over her sisters without touching them, first to chest bump her big dark Brahma baby sister who is utterly bewildered by the move, poor baby. She races laps around her pen so much that I feel like I should have a tiny crash helmet made for her. If there’s an opening bigger than a dime, her head must be thrust through it. If there’s anything remotely moveable, she has to move it or drag it around. She tosses a bottle cap like it’s a frisbee, and god forbid she sees anything shiny, because she has to either maul it or possess it. She’s adorable and terrifying. She stares me down and I blink, every time. I’m sure working for her as her personal assistant for the next five years will be a great opportunity for me. Please, if she asks, tell her I said so, okay?

My mottled cochin bantam is almost a year old. She started laying at 17 weeks and hasn't stopped. I don't give my girls supplemental light in winter because I want them to have a break with the seasons and molt. Well this cochin just kept on laying. She lays 3-6 eggs a week which I think is impressive since cochins are not known for their laying abilities. She weighs 2 lbs 10 oz. She doesn't like to snuggle like some of my other girls but she is still very friendly and will often sit on my knee.

Little Bit is the cutest, sweetest chicken ever! Her poufy fluff butt, feathered legs and feet is adorable to watch. She comes up to me in the run and "talks" to me. She is very willing to be picked up and held. She is the bottom of the pecking order and my only Batman, so I will be ordering her some pals. Highly recommend!

Our girl, Beatrice, is full of sass. She’s so soft and beautiful. She’s not nearly as friendly as our buff laced polish or our blue splash Maran, but she’s still great. It’s a riot watching her run across the yard. She’s such a goof.
