“We ordered 6 ducks, 4 swedish and 2 Pekins. All arrived healthy and happt, but now 4 weeks in, both of our Pekins have had leg issues. One began to develop symptoms of Niacin deficiency though we used a duck starter with the Niacin content (more then 70 mg/ kg) listed on the bag, and from what I read later this can happen with Pekins because they grow so quickly. We have him on additional Niacin now and he is moving much better. The second we came home to find unable to stand when she was about 2 weeks old. The vet felt it was Perosis from rapid weight gain. She seems to be walking again after a week in hobbles and pain medication, but it has been a lot of work managing her. They do have a wonderful personality but as a first-time duck owner I wish we had stuck with the Swedish who are all thriving with the same food etc.
It seems like other reviewers haven't had this experience, so maybe we've had bad luck, but we aggressively researched duckling care before getting them and still have struggled with these two.”
