Great 1st time breed. Handle lots as chicks though because they can become bullies.

We have to agree that the Rhode Island Reds are a great breed for the first time flock keeper! They are friendly and tend to seek out attention but as you said, they can be a bit of a handful if attention is not given to socialize them with their flock mates. Please let us know if we can ever be of assistance with any questions as fellow flock keepers, we are here to help!

I have a bit of a bias when it comes to the Rhode Island Reds as I just find them to be one of the best in my own flock! So cute, friendly and great egg layers too! We hope you many years of enjoyment with your babies!

We received our RIR last May and she is now a healthy 13 month old hen who is both pretty and friendly (not at all a bully). She started laying at 19 weeks and reliably provides us with 4-5 medium to large eggs per week (usually weighing ~60g). Several of the RIR reviews indicate that their girls produce 5-6 large to XL eggs per week, but our girl has been slightly less ambitious ;-). She has NOT been broody, which is a huge plus in my opinion.

Rhode Island Reds are a great addition to any backyard flock! It sounds like your girl is laying about the right size egg for her breed as a "large" size egg is typically 56.8 grams. An "extra large" egg would be 63.8 grams and that would be very unsusual for this breed. The Reds are very very friendly birds - I have a few myself and they are the ones that tend to follow me around just to hang out in the yard :-) We are happy to hear that she is doing well and bringing you enjoyment with her presence. If you have any questions or concerns any time, let us know.

I’m in Montana and 3400 feet up between two mountains , I wanted the hardiest birds I could get.

What a beautiful state to live in! You chose wisely as the Rhode Island Reds are a very hardy breed indeed, and as a flock keeper of a few myself, they are great to have in any backyard flock! My girls love to be around me all the time and my roo - well, he is a wonderful protector and is relatively calm when he is just hanging out and not worried about his hens :-) Please let us know any time if you have any questions. We are happy to help!
