Mystery Chick from Our Rare Marans Assortment Female Reviews

4.6 Rating 11 Reviews
Customer service is the best I’ve seen anywhere and I’m so picky about stuff like that. These chicks are cute and healthy, we did have one loss out of 10 chicks. They waited the 48 hours to see if we had any other losses and then credited us for the one chick. Very helpful with identifying them as well.

We are sorry that you were unhappy with your assortment. The breeds chosen to fulfill your order are selected by the hatchery based on which breeds have a particularly good hatch the week your shipment is scheduled. This means you may receive more than one of the same breed in the assortment, and can receive rare and even 'sold out' chicks at a discount. To determine the breed of your unidentified chick, you can search our Baby Chick Identification photos or email us for help.

We ordered 1 chick from this assortment pack, and I so badly wanted a Blue Splash Maran. I did not get my hopes up seeing as they are such a popular colour choice. When I received my chicks about 3 weeks ago, my random Maran was a yellow chick. I assumed I had gotten a White Maran (which is great also), but a few days later I decided to look up the band color and I realized I had a Blue Splash! I was so excited, and she is honestly one of the sweetest and smartest chicks out of the group. I cannot wait for her to get all her adult feathers and start laying some dark brown speckled eggs.

I ordered 10 or 12 of these back in late February. All of 3 died within 5 days. All were taken care of and I had about 30 other chickens from MPC in with this same batch, all received same time, all else survived. I have an egg farm so I know how to care for them properly. Although I didn't necropsy this particular batch (rare marans), I have had other necropsies done and everything seems to point to omphalitis (yolk sac infection) which would be a hatchery problem. I'm not sure if MPC uses a third party breeder for this particular assortment but it makes me wonder since I've never had this problem with MPC before. With the exception of this particular assortment, I've only ever had incredibly healthy birds from MPC. Since the refund window for MPC is only 2 days and omphalitis takes up to 12 days to take effect (re death), peaking at day 5, I was only able to be refunded for most of the birds, not all. I understand the policies so that's fine (and as always MPC readily refunded me those birds with no problems at all-- AND this review is NOT regarding a lack of refund past the initial refund window. As I mentioned, policies are policies and understandable. MPC honors their policies and thier customers in general). I only mention this for others to factor in as a possible, though not necessarily probable, risk when purchasing this assortment. The biggest disappointment is that I don't get to have all of these beautiful birds in my flock but the 3 that made it are sweet and a real treat to watch foraging in my yard. If it's not clear, my review is for this assortment and not a reflection of MPC customer service or its birds in general. Both of those are great and highly recommended. The Black Copper Maran that came in this assortment is one who lived and the other BCMs that I've intentionally ordered have lived so I'd say those are good. I'm not sure what the other two are but they are the same and sure are pretty.
