Baby Chicks: Swedish Flower Hen Female Reviews

4.7 Rating 41 Reviews
Most fun breed you'll ever keep! Swedish Flower Hens are truly unique, coming in unlimited color combinations and degree of flowering due to their landrace status, and their personalities are among the most varied and fun around the yard. They are hardy, mischevious birds who can escape 4' fences, hide eggs like pros, and descimate a flower pot in minutes, but they are also the most curious creatures you'll ever meet, and are equally as happy following you around, exploring your house or open vehicle, and cuddling in your lap. They are excellent layers of large eggs, hardy in hot or cold climates, are only occasionally broody, and are the best foragers around. They are not good with confinement though, and need free range time to quiet those active minds. This breed will not disappoint, as long as you don't mind them outsmarting you from time to time.

One of my top 5 favorite breeds! I've bought all of my Swedish Flower Hens from MPC, and they are smart, loveable, sturdy birds that lay a decent amount of large eggs, and only get more beautiful over time. They are densely built, hardy in hot or cold weather, can hold their own in a flock setting, come in a variety of colors, and are excellent foragers. Cons would be that they can easily clear 4' fences, like to go exploring, enjoy hiding their eggs, are fiercely independent, and many of my hens have grown spurs with age. Only 1 out of 6 has ever gone broody, and most of mine were snuggly and sweet. If you want calm, stationary birds who don't mind confinement, this is probably not the breed for you, as their inquisitive nature and propensity to explore will result in frustration with fellow flock mates. This breed pairs well with other independent breeds such as Barred Rocks, Easter and Olive Eggers, Marans, Orpingtons, Orloffs, Sussex, and Rhode Islands.

Thank you so much for providing such a thoughtful review! This is definitely helpful for other customers who may want to know a bit more about the breed and we cannot express how much we appreciate you taking the time to list all the wonderful things about our Swedish Flower Hens while also providing some insight on things to consider before adding any to one's flock!

What a neat looking breed with a good personality - my Swedish Flower Hen was a black and white chick, though she's turned more of a blue color with white as she's grown older. I cannot wait to see how her color continues to evolve as she becomes a full grown adult!

One of my favorite breeds, these birds really are like a box of chocolates you never know what you're going to get. I've had blue/white speckled hens blue/white/red speckled hens (some Swedish flower are mottled not mille that's normal, this breed is a land race and you get all kinds of cool color possibilities) blue and white and red, a black and white hen, a hen that was black but had Millie fleur dapples in white and tan through her whole coat, one pullet that was absolutely beautiful, crested red, black, white and tan all spotted and mixed I couldn't wait to see her as an adult but sadly we lost her to a neighbors dog. The hens are hardy, great foragers, they blend in really well in the dappled sunlight through the trees on our property. I've never had one picked off by a hawk or owl and we have lost so many birds to air predators! I have three roosters and they're all beautiful, probably even prettier the hens, and they're so gentle and good natured. Never had a problem with one of them being aggressive.

I ordered two SFHs back in June, they arrived warm and in great health. Unfortunately, one did pass the day after I got her, but the other has flourished. MPC customer service was incredible, they were extremely helpful and supportive when I called about the chick's death and then later with concerns about the other (turns out she was very dramatic in adjusting her crop). It was lovely to chat with some of their employees who own chickens and are invested in the health of each chick they sell. At 4.5 months old, Aphrodite never did develop any of the traditional "flowering," but is a lovely white with a few black feathers throughout. She was a bit standoffish as a chick but is now the sweetest hen. She loves to follow me around as I do chicken chores and yard work. I hope to order more SFHs in the future, as they are a beautiful breed and great companions!

We order two chicks- one was not long for this world and died 5 days after we received her- she was quiet and tired from the start. The other is strong and boisterous, very happy and healthy. Natures way.

We got a single SFH and she ended up black with white spots on her chest & brown spots on her back. She's the sweetest girl, we named her Honey. She loves to sun bathe and sit in my lap or in my arms. She's not laying yet but she's just a doll.
