Baby Chicks: Silver Spangled Hamburg Female Reviews

4.4 Rating 19 Reviews
I love their upright stance and gorgeous markings. They aren't the absolute brightest bulbs of the group, and they tend to be higher energy and a little more skittish. Super fun to watch, it's more like watching a bird at the zoo. Eggs are small and pretty frequent.

My love of Oreo, our Hamburg, began the moment I opened the box last October when we got our hens. She jumped out onto my shoulder before the box was even fully opened, and starting chirping right in my ear! She has remained a jumper, but was very standoffish for a few months. Recently, she has become the clingiest (in a good way!) chicken -- always on my heels whenever I am outside, and will hop onto me the second I stop moving. She loves to be picked up, adores her pets, and will sit on my shoulder as I do yard chores. Size-wise, she is smaller than even our smallest "Silked Easter Eggers," but she has one of the biggest personalities. She is not producing eggs yet (the only one of our six October chickens to not be producing yet), but honestly, even if she winds up laying the tiniest of eggs, I will love her all the same. Oreo is an absolute treasure, and I love her to bits. Highly recommend! If anyone is on the fence about ordering a Hamburg, don't hesitate to put in your order! Or, if your Hamburg is still being a bit standoffish, don't give up!

Our little darling must have 9 lives, and thank goodness she does, because she needs them. I won’t mention the ways in which we almost lost her 3 times. She is tough! Even through all of that, I am ordering another one because I absolutely adore her! Hamburger flies higher than most of the others, but the highest she has ever flown is 5 feet, and that’s rare. She sticks with her flock sisters, which are all much bigger than her. She does yell if I pick her up, but I don’t care. She knows to come over to my left side where there are always special treats for her only. She is smart as a whip. She is adorable, all polka dotted, and reminds me of a pigeon more than a chicken. She started “talking” a few days before she started laying. It is the cutest sound, a cross between a bird and a chicken. On rare occasions, she “skips” around while she is singing! Too cute for words. She did not mature until 8 months old and she laid her first egg shortly after. She just started laying a couple of weeks ago, at the beginning of winter, and she is laying an egg every other day. She does lay white eggs, but they are NOT small. They are medium to large sized. I don’t know how that is possible! Even her first egg was medium sized and she has never laid a smaller one like all the other chickens did when they first started. She is tiny, but fierce, and does not back down to the big chickens. Her best friend is our huge Brahma. I highly recommend this little doll. Every flock should have a Hamburg or 2 in it. :)

I got 2 of these hens in April of 2018 and I absolutely love them. I read reviews and thought they would be flighty and mean. They are the gentlest birds I have (sweeter than my buff orpingtons even). They sit on my lap and always come on the porch and sit beside me if I am outside. They even let my little boys pet them and pick them up. They also lay every day.

I had her for two years. She liked me but wasn't the most cuddly and wouldn't follow me around and stuff. She was very pretty and I liked looking at her. Her eggs were all nice and she got along with the other chickens. I loved her... the only problem is that one time during winter she must've flown over our (very tall) fence on accident when she was scared and we haven't seen her sense. Don't get these if your fence is small, but otherwise, they are very good breeds.

When I read the description of the personality of these it stated they were flighty but I assumed if I loved her enough mine would be diffrent. I was wrong lol. Clover is extremely pretty but she avoids me like the plague. And if I do manage to corner her she screams and I feel bad so I put her down. I have learned to love her from a distance. My other breeds run up to me for attention but she is another story.

Spam, named for "Silver Spangled Hamburg," since it was really too easy for us to not name her that! She is definitely our little oddball out of the 8 girls we got, all different breeds than her. All the other girls cuddle in the coop/nesting area together at night and she'd rather sleep on top of the coop. She'll lead all the other girls to the backyard when they are all out and about foraging, then she'll run back to the coop to eat all by herself. She's often alone when foraging, but she'll always come check on me and loudly ask me what I'm up to before running off in another direction. She's a little crazy, not cuddly, kinda strange, and I love her for it!

Their nickname is the "Dutch Everyday Layer" and they lay faithfully for many years. They are not usually tame but make up for it in beauty. The gentle roosters are uncommonly beautiful and graceful as they run across the grass. They are predator resistant and will warn your flock of danger. They fly well as they have lighter bodies (which means they eat less feed) and will forage if given the chance. They cross well with other breeds and we have some neat chickens with feathered feed from a Mille Fleur cross-- with the gorgeous polka dots! They are smart and do like to lay eggs in odd places (sometimes high up on a shelf or in one of my pigeon boxes - who have hatched their eggs in the past for me if I didn't check often enough). Worth having one or a few in every flock and supporting this somewhat rare breed.
