“Of the four breeds I ordered, I can tell they will be my favorite. Their speckles are already showing. They seem very confident and less scared than my other breeds. I can see wanting more of them, and possibly getting a roo and breeding them.”
We completely understand why the speckled sussex is a favorite! They are so very socialable and lean to being a very calm addition to any backyard flock. And, the beauty they add is just wonderful! We hope that we may be able to help you should you decide to add more of this wonderful breed to your flock and breed your own babies! We are happy to help with any questions you may have and are so excited for you!
“Always comes when called!
We’ve had speckled Sussex in our mixed flock for more than five years. When I call the flock in at night for scratch, they’re one of the first to arrive. They like to join us when we’re outside, especially if we’re gardening. Just a really nice chicken, and a breed we’ll probably always have.”

“When we opened our box after picking up 15 chicks from the post office, our single Speckled Sussex was the first to jump out. She was the bravest and most gregarious of all the baby chicks. Along with our Buff Orpington, she is the friendliest chicken I’ve ever had. While the Orpington has a quieter, gentler temperament, if a chicken can be outgoing, our Sussex is definitely that. She’s the top of the pecking order but not a bully, the first to run up to us (sometimes pacing the fence of the run if we’re taking too long) and is happy to be picked up or pet. We wanted a Speckled Sussex for the breed’s temperament and beauty, and she has not disappointed. Her speckles are lovely, but she also has this gorgeous green iridescence in the black of her feathers. She is stunning! She just started laying light brown eggs right at 20 weeks old. She’s chatty and can sometimes border on loud, but that fits her big personality. She’s also handled the Arizona summer heat quite well, better than even some of our lighter layers. She is definitely our favorite!”
I may be biased, but I believe the Speckled Sussex is one of the most beautiful breeds out there. Your description of the way the sun catches the iridescent green in the feathers is spot on. It takes you by surprise. They do get more "flowers" or speckles as they age, so you can count on your girl to become even more lovely as she gets older. We wish you many years of happiness with all of your chickens!
Thank you for taking the time to review our little Speckled Sussex babies! We are thrilled to hear that they are letting their sweetness shine. My Pet Chicken hopes to help you with your flock needs in the future!
