Baby Chicks: Speckled Sussex Female Reviews

4.8 Rating 82 Reviews
I had Sparkle for 5 years. She was the most gorgeous hen in my flock and by far the friendliest and most docile yet curious and a clown. A very large hen, she followed me around and enjoyed special attention. She was a reliable layer of medium large cream colored eggs. She fell victim to a predator. Sob. I have ordered a new Sussex chick and will always have one in my flock. I named her Sparkle because she sparkled in the sun and it described her personality!

We have 2 speckled (or sparkled as our kids call them) Sussex and they are absolutely our favorites in the flock. We love all of our girls, but these two are the most friendly and will hang around the house all day. Sometimes I even have to sneak to the garage so they don't see me!! Always have something to say and love sitting in out laps for snuggles. We will definitely always have some of this breed.

Yes, her name is Sexy. She is always the first one to greet me, and follows me all over. She likes it when I pet her. She has not started laying yet, so I don't know what size and color they will be, but Sexy is so sweet, she is my favorite of 20 hens.

My chicks have grown to be very tame and gentle birds,a pleasure to have around.I raised 2 Silver Laced Wyandots with them, same age, and are flighty, and not nearly as tame.I will go to this Sussex breed again.

We've had Sissy for over a year and she is a great pet and egg-layer. She lays a small tinted egg almost every day. She is very calm and gets along well with our two Black Copper Marans as well as with our four Muscovy ducks. Her feathers are gorgeous and she's very friendly and unafraid of us. I would recommend this breed for anyone who wants a beautiful, cheerful, dependable egg-layer.

Arabella is only 16 weeks now and hasn't laid her first egg, but she is absolutely gorgeous and one of the first to greet me. I have rarer, more expensive birds who don't have half the personality that she does. I can't wait to see her first eggs. She is truly beautiful inside and out.

If chickens could be livestock guard dogs, our two would qualify! Given the chance, I believe they'd wear little police caps and badges around the yard. They're fiercely loyal to the flock and they're the final say on accepting someone new. They're chatty as chatty can be, and follow us wherever we go even without treats. Laying wise, one has given us mostly small medium brown eggs and the other gives us large pinkish eggs, and are still going strong as they approach 2 years old.

OK, I'm a little late writing this review. I received Caitlyn at least 5 years ago! She's the most amazing insect catcher, jumper, mouser (yes! mouser) and an all around wonderful bird. She lays dark brown eggs & seems to enjoy the company of people. An interesting and reliable girl! I'm ordering 2 more of this breed this month. Oh, I forgot that every year after a moult, she gets more beautiful.....more speckled.
