Baby Chicks: Welsummer Female Reviews

4.7 Rating 65 Reviews
We've officially had these sweet little ladies for three weeks now, and they are an absolute delight! They're growing and learning so quickly, and they're extremely friendly and cuddly with humans. The only reason I didn't rate them 5 stars is that we ordered four vaccinated chicks, but one of them arrived sick, and she died within 12 hours of the time I picked her up (despite my best efforts to keep her alive). However, we were able to easily get a refund for this chick, and the customer service people I talked to about the incident were really kind and accomodating. This is also a super uncommon problem--I've never received a chick from My Pet Chicken who was in less-than-perfect health before, and I've purchased chicks from this site (either to keep for our own flock, or for a broody hen to raise so a friend could start their own flock) almost every summer since 2020. Odds are that if you buy chicks from here, they'll be healthy. I think that once these Welsummer chicks grow big enough that their noises won't inspire one of my other hens to turn broody (I have an Ameraucana named Pepper who has baby fever, and she will go broody at the drop of a hat, so I know better than to expose her to the sound of cheeping babies), they will be an excellent addition to the flock!

Thank you for sharing your review and for being a loyal part of the My Pet Chicken family. We’re so glad to hear that your Welsummer chicks are thriving, friendly, and bringing you joy! They truly are a wonderful addition to any flock, and it sounds like Pepper the Ameraucana is keeping you on your toes with her baby fever! We’re terribly sorry, though, for the loss of the little one that passed so quickly after arrival. Because our chicks come directly from an NPIP certified facility and undergo strict health checks before shipment, issues like this are very rare. Most often, when a chick passes within such a short timeframe, it’s due to the stresses of shipping. Even so, we know how disappointing and heartbreaking it is, and we’re glad our team was able to get that refund resolved quickly and kindly for you. Thank you again for your trust in us year after year!

All six chicks arrived within one day and perky as can be. It's only been a week, but so far, so good!

They are already showing leadership skills and teaching the others what to do

As far as being a chicken goes, our welsummer checks the box. She lays eggs (abt 3/week) and pecks at stuff. But she’s not the nicest bird in the bunch. In fact, she’s kind of a jerk. And moody as hell. She’s like your annoying office mate: gets the job done but sometimes stinks up the office. That said, MPC is great. Their customer service is always excellent and our other birds are perfectly pleasant and great layers.

Deanna, we appreciate your honest and entertaining review of your Welsummer! The Welsummer breed is generally friendly but as you know, each bird is unique and yours sounds like she is a mix of charm and challenge! It's great to hear she's doing her job as a layer, even if she does have a snarky attitude! We're thrilled to know that you're happy with your experience at MPC! We love to know that we are checking all the boxes, too! Reach out anytime if we can be of assistance!

My girl is full of energy and defintiely the boss of the group! She is headstrong and brave and just such a beauty. I love her spunky personality and I can't wait to see her full grown :)

Cheddar is the Welsummer in my most recent batch of chicks from MPC. She just started laying and lays gorgeous terracotta spotted eggs. She is curious and friendly and has a thing for people’s toes. (She’s not mean, just seems fascinated by them). She fits in well with the others and is a great little bird! I love MPC and highly recommend them to everyone who asks where to get chicks.

These hens are a little smaller than most, but I find that they lay very well, and that they are friendly.

These little ladies are not usually a very large bird compared to some of the others in their "dual purpose" catagory since the hens typically weigh between 5-6 pounds and a roo between 7-8 pounds. As you have discovered though, they are a wonderfullly friendly and intelligent breed and a great addition to a backyard flock
