“Good all-around breed. Surprisingly good mothers and broodies, who rarely leave a clutch unattended and are watchful of chicks in their care. Decent survival instincts (and coloration) for free ranging.
100% survival rate of chicks purchased here, and a high survival rate for chicks hatched by broody hens.
Welsummers have definitely become my go-to breed of choice.”
“I purchased 3 of these beautiful girls in March 2020. 1 died at a few weeks, for no apparent reason, 1 died at about 4 months. She just stopped eating. The 1 left, Hattie, seems smaller than the breed standard i have had in the past. She started laying at about 20 weeks and lays a medium brown egg, with little darker spots. A very pretty egg. She is sweet and friendly. Lives to be pettted.”
“I have a 3 year old Welsummer I got from MPC in 2017. She lays a pretty dark brown egg, or lighter brown with speckles toward the end of a laying season. Most of her eggs are large, some medium. The only reason I give 4 stars is that she tends to go broody fairly easily and is tough to break, also takes a long time to molt and doesn‚Äôt lay as well in the winter. Last year she went 5 months without laying at all. But when she is laying it‚Äôs almost every day.”
“These are a must-have! They are super smart and friendly (always first in line for treats) and they are hardy layers of unique spotted eggs. Ours have survived several Minnesota winters with no problem.”
“We had a Welsummer named Buckeye from our March batch. Sweetest chicken. Quite the talker, loved going out to seeing her! Never seen a chicken run so fast for scratch! She ended up being top of the pecking order and kept everyone in line.”
“Cornflake is definitely the friendliest chicken in our flock! From day 1 she has always wanted to be by my side and even sits on my shoulder while I'm out doing yard work. She's always the first to try something new and she's for sure at the top of the pecking order, but gentle and sweet - just bossy! By far my favorite hen (and it's hard to pick a favorite!)”
“Got 2 hens and both are the best. They're not afraid of the dogs and sit with them on the porch. Get on my lap and just lay down. They lay smaller dark brown eggs about 4 days a week.”
