“I ordered a silkie knowing they were usually sweet and broody. Lulu is very nice, as in she would never dream of pecking people, even when hormonal, fluffed and growling in the nest box. She's also very docile and calm when you hold her, but she doesn't usually care to hang out with us or be touched. She can be quite feisty and holds her own with all the other chickens though... even taking on the standard sized hens. The only problem I have is that she goes broody at the drop of a hat, and it sometimes takes weeks in "chicken jail" to break her, whereas others take only a few days. If I don't, she makes all the others go broody, and doesn't take care of herself. She'll be the first I choose to incubate and raise chicks, but until then, she's kind of a pain because she's broody so much. She'd make an excellent, protective mama one day, and if I had needed a good mama hen, I'd give her a 5 star rating.”
“I have a mixed white "Paint" Silkie, very beautiful bird!! These birds are very, very loving and cuddly and Super Smart!! Silkies make Great mothers. I don't need to care much for my hatchlings as my Silkies do all the work. No need for heat lamps or any issues drinking or feeding the Silkie Moms do all the work, made my lazy. Some Silkies do go broody Often great for hatching ANY type Chickens even Ducklings.
I love this breed. My Chicken Sparkie is on you tube caring for her chicks. Search.. Clare Bogard for video.”
