If you are frustrated after 15 minutes of trying to make shifting across all the cogs smooth, your skills are probably perfectly fine. You just need one of these. I thought I would never need to buy one until I realized it was the tool I borrowed most from my local bike shop.

Great tool and even better demonstration on the Park Tool YouTube channel. I can’t wait to bend my rear derailleur again!

Just what you would expect from Park and you can’t tune a drivetrain without it.

Last year, I purchased a new mid-range quality bike from a reputable company. In the months that followed I began to notice lots of things wrong with the setup. I'll make a long story short by saying I disassembled the ENTIRE bike & rebuilt it CORRECTLY. (I used to be a helicopter mechanic.) One thing I did was buy this tool to check alignment of the rear derailleur and -- no surprise -- it was off... WAY off... nearly 2cm off! How did this bike ever shift?! With this tool I was able to straighten the hanger (integral to the frame), then straighten the derailleur's sacrificial B-link. The two procedures took less than 15 minutes. When I reinstalled the derailleur I discovered stark evidence pointing to how far off the original setup had been. To my amazement, the shift cable (wire) was now too short to pass through the pinch bolt! No problem. I had a spare, so 30 seconds later a new cable was in the housing. Now, the bike shifts like a snap and the drivetrain is whisper quiet.
