For the price, this is a good pump. I had a budget cheap pump, along with my older Rennkompressor. I decided to upgrade the daily user to something that would last more than a few months, and get a big gauge, too. The hard to read Rennkompressor is a backup. 'Steel base' obviously means different things to different people. I was replacing a broken plastic base pump, and steel base was important to me. The Park Tool pump could be considered 'steel base' only by technicality, if you consider the plastic footpad piece as a 'base extension.' I consider it a plastic base with a steel reinforcement flange connected to the barrel. That being said, it is quite sturdy, and appears carefully engineered. Although mostly plastic, it has a high quality feel, though fairly lightweight. The handle feels good, and the curve works well for me. Indeed, the curved handle is aesthetically pleasing, giving the pump a classy but modern look. That plastic/steel base is quite stable, and the height will suit most people very well. The massive white gauge with bold needle is magnificent, and the primary reason my venerable Rennkompressor with tiny dark gauge needs a stable mate. I have seen complaints of overly thick needle. Those people are the modern equivalent of the tiresome weight weinies. I used to hand weigh every reloading charge. I understand obsessive compulsive people. That bold black needle on a white field is ideal. By the way, my gauge is well calibrated, at least for cruiser and hybrid ranges. I didn't count, but the Park Tool pump filled tires slightly faster than my Rennkompressor, and with a slightly smoother stroke. The check valve functioned flawlessly from 0-80 psi. I am running 2 pairs of 40s, 1 38, 2 26x2.125, and 1 26x2.0 The head/chuck amazed me with a perfect seal and easy insertion and removal on Schrader and Presta valves. My SKS Airchecker has trouble with one valve stem, but the Park Tool pump does not. Makes me wonder if pump heads get the blame for out of spec valve stems. When I saw some plastic on the base, I was ready to be upset, but a steel reinforced base is the best of both worlds. I enjoy using this efficient pump with flexible hose, slim head, and easiest reading gauge, ever. I have pride of ownership of my fine Park Tools, definitely including this good looking and sturdy pump.

It's hard to believe that this is a legitimate Park Tool product. As many others have said, the gauge is inaccurate. The entire pump feels cheap and poorly made.

Another addition to my collection of ParkTool products and tools. The pump is nice and sturdy for a plastic pump. It pushes air smoothly and easily, has a pump head for both Presta and Shrader valves, and the nice big dial to see what air you’re pushing in. It was totally worth what I paid for it. Shipping was fast and I would buy direct from ParkTool again!

This is one sturdy air pump! The pressure gauge is very large, which is really appreciated. The pump is also very stable.

What a disappointment. Bought this as a replacement for a Topeak Joe Blow that had given up the ghost, thinking it would be the usual Park Tool quality, but found that’s not the case. The pump head seems to refuse to fully seat on a valve stem, and the gauge simply is not accurate when comparing to an SKS digital gauge. Would 100% not buy again and would counsel others to avoid it, too.
