Bought the radios with an additional XL battery, hand mic, and usb charger. Pros: speaker is very clear, simple to operate, good form factor that is easy to hold. Came pre-programmed with 22 GMRS channels, 2 tone codes per channel, GMRS repeater channels and Weather stations. Flashlight works but not very bright. Great customer support when a question came up. Cons: Manual does not explain the existing Tone codes (i.e. -10 and -25) and how they work (not referenced on even the main screen where CTC is shown for example), had to ask. Putting the battery clip on is a pain, the XL battery clip was pre-installed, why not just pre-install the rest? Lack of USB-C charging ability, the separately purchased USB cable appears to be proprietary and only works on the XL battery. Not even a USB charger available for the charging cradle. Seems to be a lack of ability to reprogram an existing channel to do different CTC codes (or, its not obvious how to do it), the manual talks about setting up a channel in frequency mode only. The Screen shows CTC, but then the Menu shows CDC (inconsistent terminology). It would be nice if the screen always showed the internal channel, so you can learn and jump to the channels faster. (i.e. 48 on the keypad takes you to 16-25) and this is a bit wonky sometimes. 48 works typed as is, but if you want to go to 20 you have to type 0 then 2 then 0. The battery initially takes some getting used to, it does not slide on as easily as it should in order to lock, took a few tries. FM radio reception is not great, in my area (suburban, not rural) to get some of the stronger stations I have to hold the radio in my hand. If I put it down, the reception drops. Not particularly useful feature that way.

Batteries do not match R-1 radios. Still a nice walky talky .
