How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Hugely. Especially comparing Gore and Toa's stories. Initially they took the perspective that the Maori people were wrong as they took off with the items but on re-reading, realised that Toa had given everything except his cloak as part of the trade. Conn
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? That it can be heaps of fun and students really enjoy looking at what life was like in the past. This kit challenged thinking on things like the use of fire for cooking - it was strange to them to have a fire on a ship but it would have been needed to coo
Students really got into the history aspect of this kit. Many went home to find out further information and shared these with me on Seesaw and Google Docs. All students finished this experience with new understandings or knowledge with many recognising that our backgrounds and 'where we were' change what we 'see' in the same story. Another aspect of this was that they hadn't thought of the different technology that wasn't available in the past and on ships.

So fantastic to have a resource to help teach NZ history. I love it that I had students saying I love Tupia he's my favourite character. The character cards were so informative and linking everything together was so interesting. A wonderful learning journey that we all went on together.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? Each card depicted a different story and each day we would read someone's perspective, then talk. The kids started to formulate theories about what was fair, who was on each side, etc and then further discussed who they thought was in the right/wrong. The
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? This kit provided two different sides to the story and allowed you to teach in a unbiased way- this is something I always aim to do- so it was great that these resources allowed me to do that so easily! This was a phenomenal resource to have in the classroom and the year 5/6 learners in my class thoroughly enjoyed re-shaping their view around Aotearoa's history. The hands-on resources were epic and they especially loved how the materials came in a spy-like envelope. Every day we would cover one person's perspective and then reveal one of the mystery items. It was awesome to see their excitement when they started to piece together a timeline of the events that occurred at Mercury Bay. I would highly recommend these resources to any learning facilitator who enjoys highly engaging discussions among their learners.

How did this kit help your students to discuss the idea of multiple perspectives? It was great for discussion and debating and sharing perspectives - I could see children getting passionate about their person and referring to their 'card' if needed and putting ideas and thoughts together!
How has this kit changed your perspective on teaching NZ History? It has encouraged me especially with how creative you can be with teaching this. The resources helped a lot and I was able to put my 'spin' on how I taught it too. I learnt a lot myself and felt that it was such a valuable experience for my students.
I teach a year 7 &; 8 class in Palmerston North; they loved this experience. As did I! Using Cook's Cook was a fantastic introduction, whole-class reading, followed up with some dramatic presentations of the story from the students. The 'Guess Who' game and the mapping where characters had been present, was interesting and I noted that the whole time we were looking at our NZ history, my students were engaged and talking a lot about the topic. They followed up with their own recount, choosing a character and telling their story as part of our writing one week. In the last week of term we had our museum exhibition preparation and exhibit on Friday in our School Library. It has been a rich and interesting kit and I am very grateful to have been able to participate in this. It was my first kit too, so a great start! Thank you School Kit!

Sorry this is late! Had to defer to term 3 and I’m glad I did as this kit was a great hands-on resource that engaged the students, one that needed the time to explore it properly. Thank you School Kit for putting this resource together, one that connects to our New Zealand history. Your kits are well put together and include everything you need to teach it. I also like the sharing that happens on the Facebook page, as the ideas that people come up with on how to display, etc are awesome and helpful to glean from. I would definitely teach this kit again.
